just downloaded Lande of Lore: Throne of Chaoes from the Underdogs site and DL Dosbox to play the game and I did everything that was need to start. I am getting this error:

Z:\>mount C C:\
Drive is mounted as local directory C:\

Z:\>C:

C:\>cd games

C:\GAMES>cd LOL

C:\GAMES\LOL>Lands

Lands of Lore CD - SkyFish release
Drive B is mounted as local directory C:\Games\LOL\
EMS = 0 XMS = 15662048
IO error with STARTUP.PAK (2) - exiting
Removing drive not supported. Doing nothing
B:\DATA\ENG>

I am running Windows XP
I have VDMSound
D-Fend

I also get a similar error with VDMSound

What am I doing wrong?

Last time I checked LoL:Throne of Chaos worked properly. Make sure you have it patched to latest version (1.23 US I think).

Works fine here. Dynamic core with 10000 cycles. Athlon XP 1800+ under Windows XP SP2.

Did you run setup.exe for configuring sound?

I chose plain SB for both music and digitised samples.

Once I figure out what this error is I can probably run the game fine on Dosbox or VDMSound.

This is the VDMSound error which is similar to the DosBos error:

Loading 'VDDLoader.dll'...
Lands of Lore CD - SkyFish release
EMS = 0 XMS = 16627680
IO error with STARTUP.PAK <2> - exiting

Mine is the floppy version. It seems your startup.pak may be corrupted somehow. IO error seems to be a different way of saying "file not found". I would check for that file and I would also check for file attributes, specially read-only.

I am using the floppy version and it doesn't have a startup.pak, maybe that is something from the cd version only? I have several .pak files such as Chapter1.pak through Chapter8.pak or intro.pak but not the one in your error message.
I noticed that you are mounting a drive B

Drive B is mounted as local directory C:\Games\

If you are mounting that as your cd it might think it is a floppy instead of a cd since it indicates B: as the drive letter. That's why you get the removable drive not supported message.
Try doing something like below, where D is the letter assigned to the cd in DosBox and F:\ is your actual cd letter.

mount d f:\ -t cdrom

Install if from d: after mounting that drive and see if it works

Local Disk C:
My CD/DVD drive is E: ( where I put the LOL cd in )
3 1/2 Floppy A:
cd-rw drive is D:

This is all I have.

I typed your commands and when I get there I hit intall and it goes to the menu, english and:

It is asking me for source disk: E

Destination Disk: C

Destination directory

Could not make the destination directory

You should use a mount -cd command inside DOSBox. It will display a list of available physical cd/dvd drives to use in conjunction with the -usecd <#> parameter for the mount command.

E.g. mount d e:\ -t cdrom -usecd 1 -ioctl -label LORE

I actually got the cd to work without dosbox or vdmsound, but the music won't play. I can hear them talk and hear the rest of the sounds though.

Any reason why this might be, I chose Soundblaster in setup.

> I tried, says CD Drive not found.

Somewhere in the LaunchPad settings, there is checkbox for "Enabled low-level CD-ROM support". Tried it?

The Underdogs version works perfectly for me.

Some random dosbox.conf settings:
core=full
cycles=5000
xms=true
ems=true

I'm pretty sure I'm using the default soundblaster config options. I picked Soundblaster Pro from the game's setup.

The game seems to have to map itself to drive B so if you're already using that drive letter for something else you're out of luck.

Original CD works fine here with 0.63, dumped the disc to an ISO image - no more annoying pauses to read data from the CD. Also, I don't know if this helps, but the game looks to the E:\ drive for the CD, so you should mount your CD/image there.
