Hi everyone,

As some of you know, it's possible to use Compact Flash cards with a CF to PCMCIA adapter on the HP 100 and 200LX palmtops.
But, beyond a certain size (I think it's 256MB), the cards don't work.

There exists a driver called acecard3.sys, which, when added to the config.sys, will enable the use of larger cards, up to 2GB.
Unnfortunately only very few cards work with this driver.
I have purchased approximately 7 different brands of cards of 1GB and 2GB and only one of these worked,
it was an "Advantech SQFLASH Industrial Grade 2GB" card.
All the other brands/types don't work. (I use them with my Psion Series 5mx instead, and they work fine on that machine).

Here's a link to an old webpage which has a list of working cards:
http://bmuessig.eu/using-cf-cards-in-the-hp-100lx

Now, you'd think you can just buy a SanDisk 2GB as shown on that list and expect it to work, but,
I have bought 4 different cards, all old SanDisk 2GB cards and none worked.
I tried to make sure they weren't Chinese knockoffs when buying (making sure they weren't shipped from china),
but it's impossible to know for sure as I don't have a reference card that I'm sure is authentic.

I even bought another 2GB Advantech SQFLASH card and it did not work, so I assume it's probably a fake card.

So, my question, what makes the few cards that DO work so special ?
Is there a way to test them ? Maybe with some kind of advanced diagnostic tool that can show technical details about a specific card when attached to your PC ?
There must be some kind of difference between the working ones (only a select few, I've found only one card) and those who don't work (most cards).

I'd love to hear from anyone who can illuminate on this...

Thanks for your time,
Radiance

I'd be interested to know the differences between cards as well, as plan to buy quite a few for upcoming retro builds, and am sure I'll come across the same issues. I'll be using Startech IDE/CF adapters, and for each system and OS combo will have separate cards. No point buying loads of one type if they turn out to be incompatible with too many systems, but also prefer to know which are most likely to work on most systems.

See my graphics card database at www.gpuzoo.com
Constantly being worked on. Feel free to message me with any corrections or details of cards you would like me to research and add.

I agree, best to get the ones that will work on all systems.
Maybe it's something todo with the type of memory used like SLC, MLC or pSLC,
or, maybe the type and amount of Flash chips inside the card is the issue. (I've no idea what's inside a CF card though, and if there's one or more flash memory chips)

I've googled and not found anything yet, but if someone knows of the existence of some kind of modern diagnostic tool that can show all the technical specs of a CF card inserted in a CF card reader via USB,
I could use that to compare the working card vs the non working ones and see if there's something unique or different...

Another thing that could help is for someone with good knowledge of assembly and x86 system architecture to examine what the acecard3.sys driver actually does...
That could give some good clues...
If anyone has the experience/knowledge, here is a link to download the acecard3 driver: http://mizj.com/acecard3.zip

Thanks,
Radiance

Here's another interesting link, a PDF document about SanDisk CF cards with a lot of technical information about them:

And some less technical instructions here: https://hermocom.com/8-cat-hplx/13-storagecards.html

Just bumping this thread back up to hopefully have someone see it who has experience with how CF cards work and/or can recommend a tool or a way to analyze the difference between working and non-working ones...
A lot of 200LX users could use this knowledge...

I know this is not exactly what you are looking for, but I once had to deal with an extremely picky IDE interface in a multitrack audio recorder and unsuccessfully tried a multitude of IDE or adapted devices, including vintage 2006 Sandisk CF cards that I have owned since new . Using a vintage multi-track recorder as a mixer, namely the Roland VS-880EX - might apply to other Roland VS- units

Anyway, one currently available CF card that worked was this https://www.amazon.ca/Bodawei-Extreme-Compact … /dp/B07GCNMWX8/ . They have multiple capacities and varying reviews, so YMMV, if you decide to try one .

Thanks, I might order one to try 😀
