Currently I am trying to revive my old 386 machine. I bought it some time ago. Unfortunately it was incomplete and seller didn't secure package well enough which cased some damage of plastic front and back panels.
There was also a problem with depleted built-in batter of RTC module. Fortunately I was able to mill trough the plastic to the leads and connect CR2032 battery instead. I tried to increase amount of RAM with some spare SIMM modules, unfortunately computer seems to be particularly picky about memory - it wasn't even able to boot with additional modules, so I revert to working configuration with single 4MB stick.
No I came across two additional problems:

  • I am not able to connect floppy drive. I got 601 error at boot.
  • I was able to connect CF card to the IDE cable, but BIOS lacks autodetect option. How to set up most common sizes (32MB, 128MB, 256MB, 512MB) using heads/cylinders/sectors values? Is it possible to prepare bootable MS-DOS CF card on linux pc? Without working floppy I am unable to install MS-DOS directly.
