That sucks the big hairy one man. Does it function? If it does, just get a dust cover (and your money back of course) and have at it.

I have a feeling that even if it does turn on that what ever alignment it had for scanning is ..uhh on the floor as part of the puzzle.

Yeah, a lot of times sellers will just say to keep it and not bother with a return. Ah well, could sell it for parts I suppose.

I'll try it later, I bought it as a spare, already have a working one, this one was cheap and sold as "powering up and untested otherwise".

All the plastic parts are from the front bezel/door or back bezel screw holes.
The scanning ccd and light source are fixed, only the film holders move.

Got pretty lucky on ebay and got me a Roland MPU-401AT new in the box

Holy crap did the delivery guy use that poor scanner for target practice. I'm going to guess that the seller just put it in a bow without proper packaging and sent it on its way.

I had this happen with a Sony Super 8 video cassette player that I sold. The case shattered into a million pieces during shipping. I did use bubble wrap and other packing material, but I should have packed it thicker.

I'm not sure what kind of plastic this is, but you can't tell in person that it's going to shatter like it. It must explode all at once on impact or something.

I just tested the scanner and it works fine, not a complete loss.

Just please don't blame the shipping companies. The plastic of this vintage, yes this is the very subject of vintage stuff were formulated badly, simply shatters. I had number of not too old Sharp TVs, less than 10 years old has very fragile plastic that I cannot smack the top to diagnose the problems and yes that was back in 2004-06 timeline. Cannot be glued back together either.

Compaq had this issue very badly from 1990 to 1995 or so. Even had 2 years old in use new in the box purchased in 1993 Compaq LTE 386s/20 developed cracks in the hinges mounts in the lid itself.

It's the same as sending a CRT these days, a heavy object with plastic housing. I wonder what type of plastic that was? The way that's broken suggests to me it's not regular plastic, probably some mix.

My Toshiba Portege 320CT's dock was smashed to bits in a very similar way - I thought the courier had been using it as a football, but the plastic on it is *really* fragile having tried to repair it. I think the Toshiba laptops from the mid-90s used a lot of mixed materials, like ABS or something with glass fibre.
Maybe your Canon film scanner is made of similar plastic? My canon DSLR has a similar kind of plastic: https://photo.stackexchange.com/questions/572 … d-camera-bodies
I don't think these special mixed plastics hold up well over time, in my experience they just become brittle.

it doesn't even help if the seller packs it really well, as this one was, and it survived the torture of the postal service at first glance... at least on the outside...

... the monitor got smashed so hard during shipping apparently that the CRT neck broke off 🙁
at least smashed plastic can be salvaged, this one is a complete writeoff... and it was in nice working condition, it really pains me.

There are good and there bad, but shipping companies can be blamed. I used to work for one. You're supposed to build package walls inside the trailers, which basically form interconnecting "T's". People used to build a "T-wall" about 4-8 feet out, and then lob the packages over them. Unlikely this would happen with a package this large, though. I'm betting it fell off a belt.

With that said, most damage I see doesn't come from the shipping company... it's from the shipper and the lousy packaging.

yeah, basically the reason I got it, we had the 17" version of it back in the day... I love small CRTs and 15" CRTs are a little harder to find, especially in good condition, and the tube was looking really sharp and bright in the original pictures.
I'll have to somehow carefully extract the tube first and not get glass everwhere, there's loose glass inside... I couldn't really find anything about how sensetive a broken tube is, I'd assume once the vacuum is broken there's not much that can happen?
