Went on a CPU hunt the last week just looking to fill out some Socket 7 CPUs and Socket 3/4, picked up the following CPUs at very reasonable prices considering the stupidity of increasing postage costs. Going to be fun testing all these CPUs especially the lovely AMD 486 CPUs, I had a super nice AM386DX-40 back in the day so itll be nice getting to mess around with the 486 variants.

- WinChip2 (W2-3DEE200GSA) super curious how this one compares to the WinChip1 and if they made any serious improvements.

Interesting case of someone cutting a voltage notch into an AGP card

I had a Voodoo 3 1000 that had the 1.5V notch cut to it. I don't know why, I don't know whether the card worked that or not. I did not care or dare to find out. I have passed it onto another collector since, but it still amuses me that this exists:

I have cards modified like this although they are pre-AT ISA cards which were modified to fit 16 bit slots. Bit of a shame too because some are pretty collectible.

I can’t say the seller here but if the price is the same then it’s likely the same seller.

Today I bought 2 optical drives:
-ASUS DVD-E616A2 16x DVD-ROM drive (manufactured August 2006)
-ASUS DRW-1612BL 16x DVD writer (manufactured January 2007)

They are in good condition, also both of them have boxes (as seen in picture), and they are white.

Also as a bonus I received those:
-in ASUS DVD-E616A2 box I found a 80-conductor IDE cable
-in ASUS DRW-1612BL box I found a 80-conductor IDE cable and a 4-pin CD Audio cable

Opinion?

Compared to my T2130CT that I repaired a few weeks back, this one is in somewhat better condition overall in spite of this damage, with no corrosion yet. The T2130CT I had to rebuild screw mounts and repaint things where the corrosion had eaten everything.

I'm from Australia so after conversion, taxes, import fees and postage it was more, but I consider the taxes and import costs just part of the hobby at this point and I have been willing to stretch my uhh willingness to pay a little more for other very difficult CPUs to get before. The Rise Dragon MP6 I got recently was another I was willing to do this for, one single seller in months with limited stock, I took a chance and it was worth it, got a CPU I never thought I would have.

I don't go crazy though, like 1800 USD I saw for a K5 PR200 recently, yes its super rare but there isn't anything different about it from any other K5 other than speed.

That said with how things are with the economy and such, I have skipped out on a few nice to have retro "wants" simply because of the postage, taxes and import costs having gone through the roof and conversion rates mean the Aussie dollar just doesn't go as far as it did a year ago.

I will eventually post my findings about how different from the WinChip1 it is, im not expecting anything amazing but I might get surprised.

Keep us posted on your winchip2, The winchip"2" please benchmarks please so I could know kind of the performance is like. I have plain winchip 200 on hand for slow socket 7 to try for DOS stuff.

These traces are absolutely repairable. Have it looked at by a professional if you can't do it yourself. Don't throw it away, if it is indeed rare.

I would love to see how the FPU can (or can't) handle Quake, as that seemed to be the great equalizer of the time and what made the Pentium king.

Yeah, didn't think it'd fit in this thread so it's in the 'What retro activity...' thread instead. Repairing those was not too tough since I've got a microscope and the laptop is working 😀 No way I'd give up on this thing but it took a lot less work to get working than I feared it could be.
This was the 'easy' activity of the day, since only the top layer was damaged and it was only ~10 traces. The tough one is that I blew the circuitry for the backlight on my not really replaceable and even rarer Thinkpad 240Z by powering it up with a flex cable inserted at a 45 degree angle, really wish I had not done that.

Glad to see that you can take care of your own gear. There is no relative scale in the photo, but I expect tracea of that time to be quite large, compared to what you might see nowadays.

As a tip though, for extra small traces, I've found solder braid to be the perfect pitch for repairing traces. The copper material, and the fact that they can often be found already embedded in flux, makes them very easy to bond.

I have a few Socket 7 CPUs all around that 200Mhz speed so I may throw in some results from the Rise CPU and a the K6, Would love to include the 266 Tilly but that one requires a fair bit of modding on my part to get it running so I guess I will use a 233MMX as the base line performance level. (All CPUs will be clocked to 200Mhz to make it even for initial tests ..then done again at their stock speeds just for comparison to see what difference the extra speed makes)

Had some luck in the past weeks and managed to pick some goodies :

A ZX Spectrum 128K +2, the gray model, in very good condition and with the warranty seal still intact.

Also a IBM interface card fro the "Baby System 36", it needs some work mainly @ the missing resistor network.

A cool X38 motherboard from Asus.... The io shield is sick with the illumination ...

And at last a A1200 in a Micronik Infinitiv case with the mediator:

The motherboard had a bad video DAC and the capacitor plague, also the psu and FDD were missing .

I've been seeing a lot of newer stuff so I thought I'd post this. I actually got it earlier in the year for very little because it didn't work.

It was all original and I believe was last booted in the mid-90s when I received it. This computer stood for everything I hated back in the day with it's proprietary design and lack of expansion. But I have a nostalgia for it because the computer store I used to visit sold them 😀

The Packard bell on the left have the same case as the first computer we had at home. My parents bought it in 98 (or late 97 ?).

Lots of memories.

It was a Packard Bell multimedia 350.
P2 350. 64 MB SDR. ATI 3D Rage Pro AGP. Aureal Vortex PCI sound card. PCI 56k modem. 7 or 8 GB HDD . DVD player and floppy.
It came with a 17" CRT including stereo speakers. A mouse and an ergonomic keyboard.

Window 98 first edition. A few games like Tomb Raider 2 (3 first levels… ) Ultim@te race pro. Redline Racer. A soccer game...

I upgraded it later wit 192MB and a secondary 10GB HDD, before buying my own computer around 2001/2002

The 1.26GHZ P3 could have an interesting (to some anyway) motherboard. I love that Tualatin era P3 stuff.
