Yeah the 3XXX Xeons work fine in pretty much all 775 boards as they cannot be used for SMP, weirdly the 3XXX Xeons used the 775 socket format rather than the later 771 format.

5XXX Xeons require sticker mods, socket/notch mods and a bios mod and will not work at all in X38 or X48 boards due to having the SMP bit set on the CPU which these chipsets do not support. I wonder if there is a SMP pad on the CPU that can be shorted or sticker modded to disable chipset detection of that SMP bit, would be nice to use 5XXX Xeons on X48. (The X5470 would be a fucking overclocking beast on X48)

What is SMP?

Symmetric Multi-Processor, or in simple terms more than one CPU in the system, 3XXX series Xeons didn't have the capability to run more than one cpu in the system but 5XXX Xeons did and it was this SMP flag on the CPU that X38/48 is incompatible with.

All multi-core/multi-thread chips are SMP! The correct term is multi-socket, 5XXX are limited to dual-socket

Is not ultimate, but this last month i decide to sell my 1156 board + i3-550 and replace with a 775 board i get for free from a friend, a Asus P5B deluxe

I love this motherboard, have sata, ide, and floppy connector.

I use a Xeon L5420 quad 2.5ghz, i love this CPU because is only 50W, for my this is very important, because electricity bill is soooo expensive in spain.

4x2GB = 8GB ram, pasive ATI 5670 , x3 SSD (128GB for OS, 2x 1TB for data), 2x serial, 1x Parallel, 1x 5.25" & 1x 3.5" floppy, 1x ZIP100, 1x DVD-Rom

Hmmm yes an no, even with 4 unique cores its still seen as one single physical processor by the motherboard for SMP purposes, SMP is "Symmetrical Multi-Processor" as in more than one, could be 8 or 16 unique CPUs. the 3XXX Xeons only support single processor operation they don't have the ability to run in multiple socket configurations. The 5XXX series was limited by Intel to only support dual socket SMP but its simply a flag on the CPU and not an actual limitation of the CPU, the 7XXX Xeon series which is also Core2 can support up to 32 CPUs via SMP.

They are Single-Socket SMP. Once there were chips that could run multiple threads then the terminology changed from supporting multiple processors to supporting multiple sockets.

You can buy pre-modded X5450 CPU's on eBay for pretty cheap! They will work in boards with P45 chipset for which I insist again: is the best LGA775 chipset! I would not use multi GPU unless you want some bragging rights but a single video card powerful enough to run the games you want at max details, that would be a GTX 580 minimum, better still a GTX 680 because they come with 2gb frame buffer by default!

Words have definitions for a reason, SMP has a definition, 3XXX Xeons are Multi core CPUs with no SMP ability its really that simple.

Now you can go on trying to re-write definitions all you want but the meaning of SMP is clearly defined and 3XXX Xeons don't support it.

This is coming from Intel, the company that makes the processors.

Such words without links are worthless.

CPU Series: Intel Xeon E3-1200-v5 Series Supports SMP-FT: Yes

Basically, Supports SMP is ambiguous and Supports Multi-Socket is not.

I would think the acronym to be different if it was "Supports Multi-Socket" cause that would be SMS, not SMP. TrashPanda's initial explanation makes more sense 🤣

Side note: is there a way to disable the auto emoji feature on this site? like i just want an l.o.l not an emoji

Thats an awesome setup, What drives are you using? like a 1.2mb 5.25 and a 1.44mb 3.5? And does the Zip run ide? And 100% understand the electricity deal, im in the US and theres been a few months my power bill was $500+ and thats without running much

I dont really have any practical reason to run a multi gpu setup other than to fill out the case a bit 🤣. I just find it cooler to see a bunch of cards plugged in and doing something than just one.

Yes!! sadly electricity bill is something to take care too, for me "ultimate" is not only raw speed, thats why xeon type L are perfect

About your question, i atach a picture of the front of my computer

I have a 5.25 floppy conected to motherboard, a dvd rom drive to ide port, a zip 100 to ide, a 3.5 floppy to internal usb and usb/firewire ports

file.php?mode=view&id=150840

Sadly i did not found any late 775 board with dual floppy support, maybe latest ones are 478 or early 775?¿

Thats awesome. I got a bunch of 5.25 floppy disks from a coworker of mine, but he used to use them on an Apple II, so im not sure they would even read on a PC. Ill find out tho when i get a drive to use. I was thinking this build of mine could make use of like an LS120, ZIP drive, CD Rom, and probably a 5.25 floppy drive.

I remember looonng time ago, i read some old apple II floppy on msdos,

http://www.oldskool.org/disk2fdi/support.html

Dont know on NT

Anyways if you install a floppy (not usb) change the default microsoft driver with omniflop, you can read much more formats
