So - I’ve got a USB-IDE adapter I’m trying to use to transfer some files from a aWindows 11 desktop to a Windows 98 hard drive

All of the files I transfer can be accessed and copied absolutely fine from the Windows 11 machine but the Windows 98 install recognises all of the files as corrupt- hard drive is formatted FAT32.
Anything obvious I’m doing wrong here? Apologies if this has already been answered but Google is coming up with nothing

Can you read known good files off it fine, and is the name shown in device manager correct? (This should exclude bad connections on the converter)
What if you open it in a disk editor (such as HxD as administrator)?

Yes to the first two questions, I can read the files already on the disk fine, as well as reading back the files copied over using the Windows 11 machine.

Haven’t tried it in HxD but will give it a go and report back

That’s weird.

Is any encryption or permissions being set on the windows 11 machine?

It is a head scratcher as I’ve used the same adapter with my 486 machine which worked just fine (albeit with ImDisk to mount the OnTrack overlay partition)

I’ll check this out and report back thank you

How large is the partition?

It’s a 10gb IDE drive in there at the moment with just the one partition on

Are you using USB at both ends, or are you connecting the drive directly to IDE at the Win98 end?

If the latter, what motherboard do you have? Possibly it can't handle the 10GB drive size. Try connecting via USB at that end too. If that does allow you (slow) uncorrupted access to the files, this is almost certainly the issue. If a BIOS update to handle bigger drives is available try that. Or find a smaller drive. Or use a controller with its own ROM.

The drive is connected directly to IDE at the Win98 end - the BIOS version on there lists support for drives “over 65gb”. The board is an MSI MS6119, it’s a complete working system so I don’t think the issue is with the size of the drive in the BIOS.

I’ll give the USB file access a try in Win98 and report back on that too

Ah that's small enough so no sorry, it's not what I had in mind

I’ve just been playing around with it, tried a Win10 laptop with it too -

If I copy files over from Win10/11 and then read them off the drive without disconnecting the adapter, they work absolutely fine most but not all of the time. If I disconnect and reconnect the adapter to Win10/11 and then try to read the files back, they’re aways corrupt.

Seems to me like a flaky adapter might be the culprit but any suggestions welcome

I did think something like that might be the case until it started getting flaky without disconnecting it, and you can also hear the drive being accessed

But yeah, that would probably explain why I didn’t spot it at first
