hello
i got a sony vaio with amd k6 cpu and 188 mb ram running windows 98 ! PCG-F801A
my problem is the fan is always running at the same speed. no settings to change in bios. its kinda loud.
laptop is clean and not overheating. air coming from back is not hot or warm.
is there any way to change this ? most laptops have fan running only when its necesary!

My PCG-F801A seems to be exactly the same - I updated to the last BIOS too to see if it would help but it seems this laptop just really likes running the fan at full speed.

The fan does have a tachometer signal so it could potentially do this if the BIOS was smart.
If speedfan is no good, there are fan speed controllers that could I think easily fit into the case if the CPU ever has a cool state vs a hot state

If the air coming from the CPU fan is not hot, the cpu might very well be hot and something is wrong with for instance the solder paste... But this is probably more likely to be the case with newer computers where thermal sensors were more common.
