Hi
I just bought Compaq Proliant 800 which can have two Pentium II processors but I have only one VRM module so I wanted to buy second one. I found several types of these modules that look similar but differ for example in the number of capacitors like for Proliant DL380, ML350, ML370 G1. Can I use these modules?
Second question is how to get into BIOS? I have Compaq Professional Workstation 5000 and to configure this computer I am using 3,5" floppy disks with appropriate software. Can I find (where?) some disk images for Proliant 800?

I just found that my VRM part nr is 327660-001.

The 800 and 850 Proliants use F10 according to wayback on it's error codes but only if an error code occurs that prompts it.
Here is the name of the Compaq System Configuration Utility: SP14381.exe for v2.53a and SP16319.exe for v2.54a. choose one, they both require 4 1.44mb blank floppy disks

uuu fellow Proliant-er , I have a 1600 , and one mb for spare ... The diagnostic floppy's are a must-have , they setup the system.
not sure about VRM(they usually are volt/ cpu/mb/system/brand specific) , hope you find correct one I searched for a Dell Precision one , but never ever found one , once I found something close but seller was nowhere to be found so had to let it and go from the market.

If you have issues making the floppies (those .exe will not work to make disks on a 64bit OS) I uploaded them with Winimage .IMZ files to archive org here:
https://archive.org/details/proliant-850r for this : Looking for Compaq Proliant 850R BIOS setup utility and question about the CMOS batteries
The BIOS disk is included. The older VRM listed with all those Electrolytics would be the proper one....

Thank You. I will try this.
Now I need only information about VRM modules.

These parts can change over a products lifecycle - the VRM (Processor Power Module) quoted in the original system docs was indeed 327660-001, but a few years later the official HP PartSurfer portal (linked) was quoting a completely different one for the Proliant 800 - in this case 329267-001 (which happens to be the same one that's used in my Compaq AP550 workstation, which is also on that same link - see pic for reference)...

Chances are it's simply a case of improved design & rating over time...

To confirm, here's a post from someone trying the same as you but who already has 329267-001 as their existing VRM (does your existing one have a part number marked on it?)...

My VRM part number is 327563-001. I checked the supply voltages for Pantium II on 100 MHz FSB (mainboard chipset is 440BX) and it is 2,0V. Pentium III Katmai also should work with 2,0V. I checked user manual for Proliant DL380 and it is working with PIII so i think that VRM from this computer can work also in mine. If it will be impossible to buy VRM 327563-001 I will try some other. Maybe I will first try to supply VRM from power supply and check what will be on output and on which pins but I also know that it may not be so simple, anyway I have to try.

I don't remember exactly do the 1600 have VRM or not? (i think they don't) , if they do I can send you one , I am not useing the machine, and I will buy all VRM locally if I find , it seems they are valuable comodity (no matter what workstation they fit).

Also a PL 1600 owner but alot of the parts are shared with the 800
Mine originally came with 2 P2 400's with VRM's 327563-001 Rev 02 aka Spare# 327660-001 According to the documentation these are good for P2 450Mhz and below
If you want to run a faster CPU you need to upgrade to 320226-001 Rev A aka Spare# 329267-001

I did try a faster CPU but my server definitely didn't like anything faster then a P3 600 Katmai.

You'll also want SmartStart 5.50 which was the last version to support these old servers and installs the latest drivers, sets up RAID, etc, etc
