This is going to be a very fun build for me, as this was my first computer.

For years this computer sat around our house growing up and later ended up in the attic, circa 2010 my parents asked if I wanted it and I regretfully said no and it was either thrown out or ended up in a garage sale.

Now over ten years later I am getting a second chance at one, unfortunately not the original.

If you bought one of these at a garage sale near cave creek arizona around that time, hit me up.

So the other day I won an auction for 1200$ for one of these systems, it comes with 32mb simm add in which back in the day I had myself added.

Also comes with a 500mb hard drive, the one I had was a 160mb which I remember the clicks fondly.

And finally It has a apple IIe card, something I am curious to play with.

This one I am pretty sure has a tray cd drive, mine had a cassette cd tray. And I kinda would like to convert it back to that

The unit will not have a math processor, of which my old one did not have one either, i have however ordered one for it. A 40mhz part which I assume will run at 33mhz

The processor I believe is soldered to the board, I would be very curious to somehow upgrade it to power pc, I remember trying to run many pieces of software back in the day which claimed to need that. This is where I get a little fuzzy on direction and would like some advice.

My ultimate lc-5xx build I think would be a 5500 board in a lc-580 case with a 550 crt right? But what can I do to speed this one up without cutting or moving away from scsi?

Awesome! I'm also an Apple fan. I don't know much about this model Performa, unfortunately. BUT, I do know of a great resource for these types of builds in particular, check out the 68kmla forum. I don't think VOGONS has a ton of Apple users so you may have better luck there. Congrats on the purchase!

We're here, even if we don't make a big fuss about ourselves. 😀

There was something adorable about these pre-second-coming-of-Jobs-Macs. I never had to work using such a system, but I remember System 7 from my school era and there are some really fun retro-experiences to be had there as well. I've mostly stuck to emulating though, but props to the OP for going all in and getting real hardware.

NIce !! Hope it all works well !! I have had a few ( a 630) and still have a Quadra 840AV and Power Mac 7300/200 (840 in garage and needs a bit of work). The 7300 ran great last check a year ago.....

Hate posting a reply and then have to edit it because it made no sense 😁 First computer was an IBM 3270 workstation with CGA monitor. Stuff: https://archive.org/details/@horun

So I found this,

I see that the cpu is a 33mhz however it has a 50mhz crystal installed. The software indicated speed is 25 mhz.

I guess I should first make sure with the group that this is compatible with the lc-550 and second, can I replace that crystal with a 66 or 80 mhz and do 33 or 40mhz on the cpu?

So it looks like a dual voltage 68060 cpu may be able to be adapted also….

A special pcb adapter will have to be employed. The current cpu in the add in card will have to be removed

Macs can't use a 68060.

The best CPU upgrade is a Sonnet Presto Plus which has a 68040/33, ethernet, and 32MB of extra RAM onboard. You will have to pay a ton for it as people with Color classics want that card as well.

I have a Performa 755.
It has the 33mhz CPU with NO Math co processor.
I upgraded the hard drive from 17omb to 500mb Quantum
It has 12mb of ram

I installed MacOS 7.5.3
It has enough room now for enough games and apps.
I installed an Apple Network card
All you need it 8mb of memory to run Netscape 3x and go online and start downloading software.
Even my Macintosh Color classic with 16mhz CPU and 8mb of RAM can go online and download software.
Plays games great too.

I guess it turns out that 7.6.1 works on lc-550. With 68030-33 and math copo I was able to install it.

So with that upgrade card I can install system 8.1?

That network/68040 card looks awesome!!!
