This was the best I could achieve with my MVP3G-M, a K6-3+ @616 MHz, and a GeForce 3 Ti 200.

still is practically double the fps than my machine, it may be due to a better gpu, more cache and higher frequency on the cpu, don't know if there is something else going on, like bios optimizations

Performance in Unreal Tournament is heavily dependent on CPU speed.

Maybe I'm missing something existential, but I have trouble understanding why (other than extreme nostalgia, I suppose) one would want to run Unreal Tournament on a vintage system, especially one at the lower bound of period-correctness...

UT99 is one of my favourite games, and i like to push systems to the extreme boundaries, I have a lot of computers that can play this or newer games, the performance of my main rig is ridiculous for what this game needs
running older games on newer systems is more an excersise of patching and fixing various issues, whether running it in the lowest possible system is more fun, for me at least
like running glquake with a voodoo2 on a 486 class cpu, or using windows 95 on a 386-25 with 4mb of ram, you know it's gonna be awful but i enjoy these kind of things

It's not the GPU.

I had 40 FPS average in Unreal Tournament with a Celeron 466 + Voodoo 3 2000. Charts here. I have since retired that build, but I'm still using that Voodoo 3 card with an AthlonXP CPU which, of course, fully maxes it out. With that CPU, the performance in UT is much better, especially in lower resolutions.

PC#1: Pentium MMX 166 / Soyo SY-5BT / S3 Trio64V+ / Voodoo1 / YMF719 / AWE64 Gold / SC-155
PC#2: AthlonXP 2100+ / ECS K7VTA3 / Voodoo3 / Audigy2 / Vortex2
PC#3: Athlon64 3400+ / Asus K8V-MX / 5900XT / Audigy2
PC#4: i5-3570K / MSI Z77A-G43 / GTX 970 / X-Fi

so... it's something with my build or the version of UT that i'm using
BTW i'm using UT99 GOTY from GOG

I vaguely remember hearing that the GOG version of UT ships with a Glide wrapper. I don't own it, so I can't say for certain. If that is the case, you want to remove that wrapper when playing on real 3DFX hardware.

For my part, I use the UT version from my Unreal Anthology disc, which I picked up for next to nothing. That release is pretty good value considering all the games that it includes.

i already knew that and i've deleted all files from the wrapper, i also have the original cd version of UT99 and it shows the same fps
