just heads up on some crazy investigation i did for people that end up having the same issue. and Because It might be possible to USE other recovery discs with other versions of the 4100 hardware/languages, work with different 4100 models.
For example we know some bomIDs because of this link https://www.tek-tips.com/viewthread.cfm?qid=1139882
Some of the BOMIDs listed for each model
4102 024
4104ES 008
4112 001, 034, 125
4122 001, 034, 125
4126 025
4160 207
4164 214
4170 205
4170ES 202
4172 214
Also some posts ask HOW DO I KNOW MY BOMID? And the response was to boot win95 and search for a file called info.bom and in it there is your BOM code. But...what happens if you formated the hard drive?!
So the only cd image i had to play for that model ( i know there are more different versions of the disc because each language english/spanish/german must have had its own CD
Also because the 1st post on this topic there is another disc picture revision where 4500 was added to the CD, different from the image uploaded to archive.org , it would be nice to have that iso image too, perhaps its more updated)
So i used this image of the recovery CD https://archive.org/details/CompaqQuickRestoreNA02901Q3
And some sites even mention that the password of the zip file in the recovery CD is PREDATOR001 , so i started playing with the zip contents
When you open the package the person uploaded on archive, you see a text file and he mentions:
"4112 machine you use this command while booted up from the QuickRestore boot floppy to install the required BOMID to the hard-drive:
uiabomwr 100MC
"
but i think he had a typo because on the text file he lists also a list of other BOMIDs and he mentions:
4112 001, 001MC, 001M8, 034, 125
So... i started looking at the recovery CD contents and i found the bom file, it is located in the /NA02/US586.ZIP/System.SAV/
and the file has a 001M8
this is what you get using the recovery cd uploaded on archive.org
another thing i found interesting is....what about the serial number? the recovery asks for a serial, and some sites mention that you can just use: 1111XXXX1111
where "XXXX" is a code that belongs to your machine, maybe a sticker on the side, or a sticker on the back of the machine, but..we are using a different recovery CD.
And i found another file in the recovery cd located at /MAP/BOMID.TXT and there is your code BBS3 ,so a good serial to use with this recovery disc is 1111BBS31111
so if you live in SPAIN and your serial in the back of the computer is 1234QWER1234, i bet you can´t use THAT SERIAL OF YOUR MACHINE with the recovery cd downloaded from archive.org, since that one is for 1111BBS31111 , so a person with the SPAIN model of this machine can perfectly use the CD downloaded from archive.org, he just needs to maybe modify the BOMID or use that serial so the setup accepts it: 1111BBS31111
So why did compaq use all this bombid stuff and serials. Well first must be localization, different languages, and other reasons why they must have done it is because of preloaded software like America Online available in USA? then lets put it in the US recovery disc but not available in other country? on another region disc lets not include it. Using that they can even had sold a different modem isa card for a different region. Or even CDs where windows95 was more updated with patches, etc
wow more info.
It looks like , in the scenario of loosing the floppy disc you can still create one using an exe found on the recovery CD.
I was able to find a recovery CD of presario 4100 series but for LATIN AMERICA, where the owner had a presario 4164 (pentium 150mhz).
it was nice to look at the recovery CD contents, in this case it did not ask me for any password, and i was actually able to see the AVI files of the star trek "Q" actor talking in spanish 🤣
so on this second CD recovery the uploader mentioned he had a model Presario 4164 latin america
So in the CD ... /MAP/BOMID.txt has
"BLR2","PRESARIO","MODEL","4164","SPANISH","271552-164","21208","21208.scp","271424-161",
This line means that with this latin american recovery cd we could use serial 1111BLR21111
and in the CD ..... /COSNA04/21208.zip/system.sav/info.bom
shows BOMID: 21208
looks like in latin america they got a lot less bloatware and programs, but win95 should be in spanish , that is obvious
