I have earlier purchased a Diamond Speedstar Pro VLB card and i had to return a Trident tgui 9440agi vlb card due to windows 3x compatibility issues. Would the card as far as performance be identical or more or less different?

Here are the specs of my socket 3 build:

Motherboard chipset: Acer V10-486 ALL IN ONE sis 85C 461
graphics video card: Diamond Speedstar Pro VLB 1 megabyte of vram
Ram: 24 megabytes
Super IO card: VLB card with two serial ports
CPU: i486DX2 66
Sound card: Sound Blaster 16 isa
L2 cache: 256k

In DOS, with a few exceptions (and neither the TGUI9440AGI nor GD5428 are one), the bottleneck is purely how fast the card can act as frame buffer so performance is very similar across the board.

In Windows, acceleration features come into play. Despite Trident's less than stellar reputation, this was their last and fastest VLB chip and a full generation newer than the GD5428, more comparable to the GD543x instead. It would have been faster. Another difference is supported resolutions/rates. Both chips support 2MB RAM, but the GD542x series is limited by a primitive integrated RAMDAC - basically it can't use the extra RAM for more colours at higher resolutions, it just offers you two extra eye-melting interlaced modes. The TGUI9440AGI can fully utilize 2MB, giving you full colour at 800x600, high colour at 1024x768 or 8b colour at 1280x1024 (although I dread the refresh rates of the latter and doubt card analog circuitry would be up to it).

So, for DOS they are equal, but in Win3.1 you've downgraded a generation and it potentially shows in multiple ways.

So basically under windows with the diamond speedstar pro it is average performance and usually at 256 and thousands of colors at 640x480 as well as 800x600?

I also was having serious issues with setting up the trident card for windows 3.1 and when I did set it to what I presumed was the correct type of driver, windows refuses to load up.

I think its driver issue. Never get any issues with my Trident TGUI9400CXi VLB and Win 3.1

Sadly never was able to get 256 colors at 640x480 under windows 3.1 but i was surprised at how fast Duke Nukem 3D was with the dx2 66 and the video card as well as the motherboard chipset.

Does the Win 3.1 return you to DOS or give error message or just black screen? What kind and model of monitor do you use?

It just yields me to a black screen. The crt in question is a CTX color monitor 1451 14’ inches.

Maybe it refresh/screen mode issue - Win3.1 driver depends on Trident Screen mode (Monitor) setup utilities.
