Is the Gigabyte GA-7IXE4 too old for a Geforce FX5200? I've been running with a TNT2 card (M64 model) and it was fine but some 3D games were destroying it making it choppy on FPS.
I found a Geforce FX 5200 on eBay for £6 and it came today, i put it in the machine after doing a display driver clean up and it really doesn't seem to like my setup. Without any drivers the mouse is lagging at times and some times comes to a halt.
With drivers, they install but upon reboot i get this:
I'm forced then to do a reset and upon doing this the new hardware found pop up appears, Geforce FX 5200 comes up and is then followed by my monitor being found but once in the desktop it's still the default resolution and limited color depth and if i go to display properties all hell breaks loose.
I am very aware this mix of components is not period correct but i am just making a machine to do everything old game related in one machine. Surely this age difference is not to the point of being incompatible? The boards AGP slot supports 2X mode whereas the card is x8 but that should only be a performance hit, right?
I'm running Windows 98 SE, installing 45.23 nvidia drivers from the Vogons driver site. Any idea? is the card too new for the system?
