I have Compaq Presario 7170 which uses integrated ESS 1688 sound card, which I am unable to set up.
The card is shown in device manager (Win95, Win98 & Win2K), but with an exclamation sign. Details says: Unable to start this device.
Tried to install several drivers but it doesn't work. Could it be some settings in BIOS that I am missing?

Could be a bad sound chip. Have you tried setting the IRQ to 7 ? (1688 uses SB Pro mode which by default was P:220, I:7, D:1 IIRC)
Also you could try this: http://www.vogonsdrivers.com/getfile.php?file … 616&menustate=0
use the 1688 config from DOS (boot Win9x F8 to DOS Command Prompt) and see if you can configure it. If it says "Unable to find ES688, ES1688" then you got a bad audio chip...

Great that you figured it out ! Was not expecting a jumper since BIOS has the enable/disable....
