So I have a 400Mhz, 256MB PC running W98SE

I have issues with games and drivers on it.
It came with STB Riva TNT 16 MB GPU, it works fine but isn't very powerful.
I have a Geforce 4 MX440, I tried that with the latest driver, 81.98.
PC works with this, but games behave strange, DX Ball = no text in the game.
NFS3 is fast in the menu but just freezes the PC when loading a race.

So I thought the card was broken.
Got hold of a GeForce 3Ti 200 64MB, it was tested by the seller.
It behaves mostly the same in games.

Tried drivers 61.76 and 45.23 but it does not work.
45.23 even slows down the PC to a crawl, just opening file explorer takes several minutes.

Any ideas?

Latest nVidia drivers aren't a good idea for Windows 98. Generally something from 44.X or 45.X versions are best for for typical nVidia cards of that era.

It's also easy to muck up a Windows 98 installation with repeated driver installations, changing configurations, and poor drivers.

My recommendation would be to start over with a clean install with all driver installs planned out in advance.
