Ι 've found locally two boards: the Asrock 775i65G R2.0 and the Asrock 4CoreDual-VSTA. I'm thinking of merging two of my systems into one. The dedicated WinXP PC consists of a P4 3.0GHz HT, a Fujitsu D1675 board, 2x1GB DDR-400, SB X-Fi Platinum, XFX HD4650 512MB AGP, which performs ok but struggles a lot in cpu intensive titles and obviously the P4 chokes the HD4650's performance. The other system runs Win7 and WinXP and consists of a Q6700, a Fujitsu G31T-M2 board, 2x2GB DDR2-800, SB Audigy SE, GTX750 2GB which is an excellent all rounder but nothing special. I want to build a fast AGP system and maybe purchase an HD3850 in the near future. I also want to run a modern OS as secondary for convenience and maybe try some DX10 games. Also with these boards I could experiment with Win98 using an older gpu like the FX5900XT which I have in my possesion...
I was thinking of getting the 775i65G and put a Pentium E5800 in there and along with my HD4650 (for now), a couple ssd's and 2x1GB DDR-400 this would make a pretty fast (and cool) system for WinXP and it should still be usable for a more modern OS like Win7/8.1. But today I found the 4CoreDual-VSTA and after doing a little bit of reading in the vogons threads I think I'm better off with this one. This board should work with the Q6700 (downclocked though? so maybe the most suitable processor would still be the E5800? ) and with more than 2 GB of DDR2 RAM (it has a limit of 3.3GB?) but only with the correct modded BIOS, which I'm not sure which one it is. So what do you guys think? To me the 775i65G seems like a low risk choice but the VSTA is probably the most versatile board but maybe a PITA to find the correct configuration.

Asrock 4CoreDual-VSTA is not recommended to use with quads without VRM mod.

I use a Xeon3230 w/ 4CoreDual-VSTA without any mods and haven't noticed any issues. What kind of issues are you talking about?

EDIT : Just looked this up, apparently it only matters if your running a PCIe 2.0 card? I'm running strictly AGP on mine so I can run 98 and XP.

VRM is a bit too weak for quads and it may run unstable. If you want to use this board for a long time, you should not overburden it.

I had to find ram that I could run at full speed but I haven't noticed any instability and I'm not looking to overclock. Still, do you have a resource for the mod you are suggesting that you could link to?

The seller of the VSTA couldn't guarrantee of its working condition so I opted for the 775i65G. I have a PentiumD 820 for now. If everything works ok I'll order the Pentium E5800. Also my RAM kit is a Samsung 2x1GB DDR 400MHz cl3. Will I need a cl2.5 kit ?

Biggest problem with ASRock AGP/PCIe boards on Quads is massive Vdroop/no LLC, and FSB limitations.
256MHz (real clock), is usually required for full stability (stock) and -0,1V Vcore drop under load doesn't help OC'ing.

As for 775i65... I own 3.0 version.

Update on this thread. Over the past 2 weeks I've built a system with the 775i65G R2.03. I'm still waiting for a Pentium E5800, but for now I use a Pentium D 915. Sadly my X-Fi Platinum died and I installed an Audigy2 value I had lying around. I've updated to the latest v3.30 bios installed the OS (WinXP SP3) on a 32GB SSD and atm I've added an 80GB IDE WD drive, along with an IDE DVD-RW drive. Gaming performance is as expected and even the Pentium D is a significant upgrade over the Pentium 4. The problem is that boot times are very slow. It takes 10 seconds to give signal and another one and a half minute to load to Windows. I've conluded that it is not efficient to run both SATA and IDE drives at the same time. Has anyone any experience with this problem? I'm considering dumping the SATA SSD and go all IDE (since I don't have a sata DVD drive atm).

I own 2x systems based on ASrock 775i65G one of them is rev 2.03 and one rev 3.0, both with ATI HD 3850 AGP.
Both systems have Quad Core Intel. The one with 2.03 have QX 6700 and the one with rev 3.0 have Q6700.
After i read the info you provided i noticed that indeed the VRM's are a bit hot, but i didn't had any problems until now.
Should i pay attention on something in particular ?

I used to have a 775i65G (R2.0 I think). It worked well. I preferred to use a 800 MT/s CPU in it though because with a 1066 MT/s processor the POST initialization time was dramatically longer. I never tried a quad.

Yes, i can confirm that the POST initialization take ....a while. But It doesn't bother me. I would like to have as many info about the system other forum members used to , or still have.

Unless you OC, both of those don't apply to your use case.
Side note : Vdroop of -0.1V should be considered undervolting.
It's very good for your cooling, power bill and VRM/capacitor longevity (on stock settings).

I saw that you use a QX6850. You modded the BIOS or it was accepted in the original BIOS ?
I ask you that because in my case, i use a QX6700 and the results are far from yours.
And of course if you would be so kind and share some pictures with your setting from BIOS would be nice.

Imperator, I've read somewhere that a bios of the 775i65g rev3 supports the rev2.03 one and newer cpu-s better then original. I've got this old revision mainboard but I haven't tried to flash the newer bios. Maybe someone already did it and will confirm it here.

In my case i own both revisions. I have 2.03 and 3.0
I am interested if he put in slot just like that or he did an update previously.
Anyway i ordered already a QX6850 from China.
I will test it in both motherboards.
I also ordered some coolers for VRM, just in case.

Well, I don't have BIOS setting saved (and system itself was assembled just for testing - it's in parts currently). Regardless, you have most important things I ran in screenshot I provided (FSB, DRAM, timings, AGP speed [SBA]). BIOS I used is the official one.

Still, keep in mind my HD 3850 was OC'ed model, so you probably won't reach my results on "stock" model.
