There is a fix for this that involves cutting a trace for a resistor that's supposed to be effective.

Yep, the lines seem to go to the UMC chipset but all cachecheck utilities I've tested so far report no L2 cache...the performance speaks for itself also

Another weird thing is that there's a Sep 98 BIOS update for this thing and there's no tools to flash it with. 🙁

Try replacing that classic 3COM 3C905 with an Intel NIC. That may help.
