The price is rightish so I'm thinking about picking it up, but first I'd like to know if anybody here recognizes it.

Yes, I have used a few of these. The versions I got were the same heatsinks, but equipped with a different fan.

Pros:

  • Very quiet due to 80mm fan (depends on fan model, of course)
  • Fan easily replaceable
  • Good CPU socket mounting clip, can be installed without a screwdriver

Cons:

  • May collide with high capacitors around the CPU socket (early Socket A boards)
  • Heatsink only provides basic cooling performance

Works fine with common Athlons, but the high-end models (>70 watts) get rather hot. Not recommended for overclocking.

I almost started to dislike Athlon XP's for their heat output. Fortunately you can enable HALT state and STPGNT state (in your BIOS, or with 'Central Brain identifier' or with 'Cool-on'). For the CPU on this system I measure: 11,4 Watt, 37 degrees C.

Hm, thanks 5u3.. maybe I'll pass on it. What I really want is either a Spire Whisperrock V or a Nexus AXP-3200. Seems like no cooler is going to be quieter than them, and both are rated for processors more intensive than my XP 1800+, so should have leave good room to try overclocking. They're just somewhat hard to find...
