you need to search for a file called SBCD.SYS (dont have a link try driversguide or similar)

In your CONFIG.SYS add the following: (if your booting from hdd and not a floppy change accordingly)

DEVICE=A:\SBCD.SYS /D:WINCDROM

Then modify your AUTOEXEC.BAT and add the following:

A:\MSCDEX.exe /D:WINCDROM /V

I have a CR-562-B here, do they need different drivers?
I tried SBCD, as well as SBCDMKE but they don't find the drive.
Soundcard is a SB 16 CT 2770

The 562 and 563 use the same drivers.

Yep same driver according to: http://web.archive.org/web/20000304200709fw_/ … s-oem-cd-r.html
So does the 562B tray open/close at all ? Are you sure you have the cable connected correctly ? Is drive set to ID0 ?
IIRC they do not work well unless on a 386 or better....

Hate posting a reply and then have to edit it because it made no sense 😁 First computer was an IBM 3270 workstation with CGA monitor. Stuff: https://archive.org/details/@horun

If you insert a CD in the drive, does it try to spin up and detect the disc? I am asking this because at least the CR-563-B model usually suffers a problem with a plastic gear on the mechanism that moves the laser pickup. Normally, upon powering on the drive the pickup moves to the home position at the center of the drive, and when it gets there a switch gets pushed by the pickup signaling the motor to spin up the disc if there is one inserted. When the gear fails, the pickup may be unable to reach the home position and so the drive never becomes "ready".

I am currently trying to fix a CR-563-B with this broken gear, 3D printed replacements can be found on eBay as it is the same optical drive used by the 3DO consoles. Not sure how different they are to the CR-562-B though.

There have been times where I have had to specify the sound card's IO address, I think it's something like:

DEVICE=CDMKE.SYS /D:MSCD0001 /SBP:220

There's also a /P switch where you can specify other IO addresses.
