Hi guys,

what kind of case do you use with your old school hardware ?
Do someone run with an ATX case ?
Are the screw holes the same in ATX and baby AT format ?
Did someone convert an ATX PSU to AT ?
Using something like that : http://cgi.ebay.fr/Dexlan-Adaptateur-daliment … =item35b9a7d72d
How does the power switch comes in ?

Because it seems nearly impossible to find AT cases in France nowadays ...

There are some hybrid cases that accept both AT and ATX style boards but they are pretty rare. You can mod a case by hand but you must use brass standoffs as plastic is just crappy. AT style boards are usually only a tad bigger than a typical m-atx board. As for the power adapter you can rig the switch with the pin trick that people use to switch on atx power supplies without being hooked up to a board. Beyond that everything else is pretty easy.

Have you tried looking Germany? Europe is almost one big country now days except it is a police state :s If there is a craiglist like site but for your country try posting an add online stating that you are wanting old computers. You might get lucky and get a few free junkers.

I was looking into this very thing just last week. I was surprised that some manufacturers still claim Baby-AT support for their cases (click here for examples on Newegg).

If I understand correctly, a Baby-AT board will fit in an ATX Mid Tower case, but not in a MicroATX Mini Tower -- or rather, the Baby-AT board might fit one, but you'll lose access to some of the expansion slots (losing AGP killed the idea for me). Can someone else confirm/deny?

Also, good luck finding an ATX I/O shield/backplate/bracket/whatever you call them with a single 5-pin DIN cutout.. you'll probably have to make your own.

Well if the most annoying thing is the lack of I/O shield, it won't keep me awake at night (or whatever the expression is in your countries ;p)
I'm already quite active on the main French forum (www.hardware.fr), and keep looking on ebay and other sites for used stuff, but can't put a hand on an AT case ...
Actually I have a three hundred antec case in the basement, i'll try to see if the holes match.
I didn't think about the pin stuff for the PSU, which is kind of stupid from me since i used it like 2 month ago to start my watercooling circuit ...
If the three hundred is fine and a simple adapter can make me use a modern PSU, that'll be it until i find a AT case (with the LED speed indicator 😁)

Thx 😀

Oh, and Europe is still far from being a big federal state 😁
Especially since posting to Europe is like twice the price of domestic distances, none of the 2 interesting towers on ebay.de are available for outside germany 🙁

I asked about this a while back and found that most ATX cases support the mounting points for AT boards, but you need to add/move the mounting posts (standoffs) to the appropriate positions. Some cases lack the necessary mounting points entirely though, so the only option there would be drilling your own mounting holes. (probably easier to just find a case that works)

I/O plates for AT boards in ATX cases shouldn't be too tough to find either. (its just the keyboard connector since AT boards use headers for everything else)

The only other issue is if you have an old AT board that actually uses 8 expansion slots, since ATX only supports 7 max.

Ok I find it hard to get a list of modern cases actually supporting AT boards.
Only NZXT seems to announce clearly their support, but the lest expensive case is 89€ ...
For the power supply, I'll simply go for an ATX to AT converter.
But I'll gladly accept any feedback on cases accepting (Baby) AT Boards.
Anyone used some Antec stuff ?

I bought an Antec case and PSU all the way back in 2002. It still powers my Tualatin rig to this day without an problems.

Edit to mention: most of the AOpen cases I have provide mounting holes for AT motherboards.

But your tualatin is ATX, I meant it as : does antec provide AT holes 😀

If all else fails you can mod a cheap case but you need tools on hand and brass standoffs to mount the board. Beyond that it all should be pretty easy.

I think i'll simply email antec and co.
I won't put 89€ in a box for a 486... without counting PSU !

You don't have any way to source cheap old/scrap ATX cases locally? (from recycling centers, computer dealers, maybe thrift stores, or local listings -not sure if there's something like craigslist for you)

If you do have access to anything like that, your best bet would be to take a chance with a generic used ATX case and see if it's AT-compatible (which it most likely will be -proprietary pre-built machines will be less likely though, generic/custom cases would be best). If they've got the right screw mounting points and already use standoff posts internally, you'd just need to move them around. If there's built-in (fixed) posts for standard ATX points and just the screw holes for other form factors, then you'd need to add your own posts. (still quite trivial, not much more complex than what's involved in mounting any motherboard)

I may be able to post some photos later but I grabbed a case I was going to throw out (Had it for several rebuilds, and the perspex casing was scratched to $$$ -

But it's a mid ATX style case - I just crammed an old AT PSU where the ATX PSU would normally go, Rigged a rocker switch to the back metal plate where there was a cutout for a serial port and bob's your uncle. AT power switch at the rear, front wiring is the same for nearly all boards...if not - easy enough to rig up. Since this project I've acquired many 486's (Got around 4 or 5x today - trying to get them working) so the switch job I did on that case is now useless (The board had several quirks so I used the CPU and other bits for another project)

Just gotta find some time (it's late....off to sleep been working on 486 projects all day today!)

The other option is to just build on open test bench kinda setup. I change my parts so often maybe I should be doing that.

I know what you mean - I always thought these looked like a cool solution..
