Since this system only has USB 1.0, that would be a very slow solution. I do have a Linksys USB device sitting around, but I'd prefer to use a PCI based card for better speed. The whole purpose is to be able to transfer files in a more convenient way than having to burn CD's all the time, and via USB 1.0 it's going to be very slow. Buying a USB 2.0 PCI card would cost about the same as a new PCI LAN adapter, so makes no sense to me, unless I needed USB 2.0 for other purposes as well.
The Realtek Gigabit Ethernet card I got in there now seemed to be working until I installed the "File and Printer Sharing" option and all of a sudden it won't see any of the other computers on the network. IPConfig shows that the PC has been given a valid IP address, and that default gateway is set correctly. My router (WRT54GL) shows this system on the client list as well, so it does seem like network communication should be working, but alas, it won't show any of the other PC's, it won't get online and it won't even ping external IP's.
Might do some more testing to see if I can figure out what's wrong. Perhaps even uninstall "File and Printer Sharing" to see if that lets me see the other PC's again.
Any advice is highly appreciated. I know a lot more about networking on XP and later than I do about networking on 9x and earlier 😒
