I've been trying to get a Linksys WMP54G wireless network adapter to work in my Windows 98 SE system. It's got an AOpen AX59 Pro motherboard with the latest BIOS revision (2.36).
With the Linksys card installed, it doesn't even POST. Some times I don't even get any display output. The few times I do, most of the POST screen is missing.
Anyone had similar problems or got any good suggestions?

WinXP : PIII 1.4GHz, 512MB RAM, 73GB SCSI HDD, Matrox Parhelia, SB Audigy 2.
Win98se : K6-3+ 500MHz, 256MB RAM, 80GB HDD, Matrox Millennium G400 MAX, Voodoo 2, SW1000XG.
DOS6.22 : Intel DX4, 64MB RAM, 1.6GB HDD, Diamond Stealth64 DRAM, GUS 1MB, SB16.

Requires PCI 2.2 or 2.3. VIA MVP3 is PCI 2.1. Sometimes you get lucky with these requirements but if it's not POSTing...

Try each PCI slot and have no other PCI cards present since sometimes cards don't get along.

Hmmm, I'm pretty sure the user manual said PCI 2.1, but that may be generic for all WMP54G, mine is revision 4.1 iirc (just packed it away), which possibly could require PCI 2.2 as you say.
I think I'll give up on wifi on this computer though, as chances are most wifi adapters will be too new to work with this motherboard.

EDIT: User manual and data sheet only says that it requires a "32-bit PCI slot".

I don't know if it helps anything, but my Pentium MMX PC (GA-586TX3) came with an Ovislink WL-8000PCI installed, so I'm guessing that's a card that would work in old motherboards. Haven't tried it myself though.

You wouldn't happen to know what chipset that is based on?
Just reinstalled Windows on this system and re-arranged things in the case to fit my Voodoo 2 in there again. Had some fun playing a couple of levels in Quake 2 😁

If this helps - I remember running WiFi card with Ralink RT2400 chipset on infamous PC Chips M726 (Ali M1621 chipset) slot1 celeron board.
However I have not tried it on Windows 98 , it served as a router for home network running PLD linux.

I've had this card sitting around for ages, I got an extra one for free when I ordered a couple a few years back. It does have Windows 98 drivers, and the install is fine, the problem is that the system doesn't even complete POST with the card inserted in a PCI slot. I'm just going to go wired LAN for the moment.
On that note, anyone had problems with Windows 98se and "File and Printer Sharing" making it impossible to see the rest of the computers in the workgroup ?

If you cant get it working, is an USB device an option for you?

Since this system only has USB 1.0, that would be a very slow solution. I do have a Linksys USB device sitting around, but I'd prefer to use a PCI based card for better speed. The whole purpose is to be able to transfer files in a more convenient way than having to burn CD's all the time, and via USB 1.0 it's going to be very slow. Buying a USB 2.0 PCI card would cost about the same as a new PCI LAN adapter, so makes no sense to me, unless I needed USB 2.0 for other purposes as well.

The Realtek Gigabit Ethernet card I got in there now seemed to be working until I installed the "File and Printer Sharing" option and all of a sudden it won't see any of the other computers on the network. IPConfig shows that the PC has been given a valid IP address, and that default gateway is set correctly. My router (WRT54GL) shows this system on the client list as well, so it does seem like network communication should be working, but alas, it won't show any of the other PC's, it won't get online and it won't even ping external IP's.
Might do some more testing to see if I can figure out what's wrong. Perhaps even uninstall "File and Printer Sharing" to see if that lets me see the other PC's again.

Any advice is highly appreciated. I know a lot more about networking on XP and later than I do about networking on 9x and earlier 😒

Yay! The Realtek adapter finally has me on the internet at least. Posting from my K6-III 400MHz at the moment.
Wishing you all a very good night and sweet dreams 😀
