Hello!

I recently got bitten by the retro bug and picked up an IBM Thinkpad 385ED in superb condition on ebay. It has the DSTN screen (wahh 😒 ), 2.1GB HD, and 16MB onboard RAM.

To go along with it, I bought this 64MB stick:

The spec sheet I found from IBM (and also the palmrest sticker) claim that this machine can support 80MB of RAM (16 + 64). However, with this particular module installed, it only shows ~48MB of memory. Is there some gotcha that I'm missing here?

Thanks

According to the hardware manual the part number for the 64MB SODIMM is 42H2817. This is an 8Mx64 part (8x 8MB chips, double sided).
I'm guessing yours is single sided using 16MB chips which the hardware doesn't support, so you only see half the capacity.

Best bet is to search on the IBM part numbers 42H2817 or 76H0268, or failing that any 64MB double-sided EDO SODIMM with 8 chips total should work.

I took a couple of pictures:

It is indeed double sided...

The memory diagnostic gives the codes:

DEV 002
ERR 83
FRU 2010

I haven't been able to find information as to what that means exactly.

I'll dig around at work today and see if I can find some single sided sticks to test.

On a side note, this thing appears to have been taken out of service in 2000 and stored away in its case for 15 years. The battery even still works!

Update on this, since this thread shows up on google.

After trying many different sticks and only ever ending up with 48MB of RAM at best, I broke down and bought the 64MB module listed on the spec sheet, part number 76H0268.

Go figure, it works now with a full 80MB. Picky, picky machine this is.

You have NO IDEA just how "picky" IBM machines are with ram. I kid you not, EVERY SINGLE MACHINE (from 8088 to pentium 2) takes DIFFERENT ram. It is HIGHLY annoying.

It is a mistake to think you can solve any major problems just with potatoes.
