Hey vogons forum,

I need some advice whether I should stick to the AWE64 Gold or swap it with a Soundblaster 32 PnP CT3670 upgraded to 8MB.

I heard somewhere that the AWE64 and the SB32 are very much similiar. That's why I am not sure.

Thanks in advance 😀

CT3670 is a great card, it has AWE64 logic onboard as well as 2 SIMM slots. It is slightly less functional however. Both feature CQM. Other forum members know the downsides of CT3670 over AWE64 Gold, I don't see anything serious there.

By the way, CT3670 is more on the budget side, while AWE64Gold is more high-end.

For these adventure games a Roland MT-32 might be worth looking into. They do play very well in DOSBox and ScummVM with Munt Roland MT-32 emulator though.

Stick with the GOLD, unless you can find a different AWE32.
Only reason I would use AWE32's are if they have a real OPL-Chip.
AWE64's (GOLD) rule over non OPL-AWE32's if you ask me.

It's really a question of personal taste and gaming need.

Don't eat stuff off a 15 year old never cleaned cpu cooler.
Those cakes make you sick....

Another option worth considering is a Vibra 16S (which has a real OPL3) + a Goldfinch card. It takes up 2 slots but you get a pretty good AWE setup for cheap.

Albeit Goldfinch won't work on some speedy systems.

İf your only problem is having higher memory, you can always use this for AWE64:

I have one on each of my AWE64s, and it simply works 😀

Thank you all for your replies! 😀

@tayyare
I already contacted the simmconn shop, I've been told that there are no simmconns for sale - as of now.
Has this changed? I would order one right away 😁

I have one on each of my AWE64s, and it simply works 😀

I actualy bought a Simmconn late last year. Paid for it on Paypal and it was in my mailbox within 2 weeks.
Plugged a 16 MB simm onboard, connected it to my AWE64 and I can also confirm that it works great.

On the subject of the AWE32's and AWE64's:
I own a number of Creative Labs sound cards, including an AWE32 (model CT3980), a SB32 (model CT3930 - Vibra chipset) and an AWE64 (model CT4380).
Just take note that most AWE32's, SB32's and Soundblaster 16's connected to a MIDI device (either via the Wave Blaster header or the external MIDI port) suffers from the so called "MIDI hanging note bug".
There are some AWE32 models and very early SB16 models that do not suffer (to a large extent) from this bug (one of them being the CT3980).
However, I also have picked up another problem with my AWE32 card, specifically "cracking" noises in Windows and DOS when playing back digital sounds - I discovered that I had to disable the high DMA channel for this problem to go away.

The AWE64 doesn't suffer from these problems. Although, some people don't like the Creative CQM synthesis (as opposed to the original Yamaha OPL3) on the AWE64. The upside is that you can apply reverb & chorus to this as well, leading to (in my opinion) a fairly more pleasent FM synthesis playback.

It is not in business anymore, eh? This is sad news. I have 4 of them, (because it also solves "bad memory" problem of AWE64s) and I purchased the last one during late summer I guess - 3-4 months ago).

EDIT: I just tried ordering, and it allowed me to add the item into my shopping card, ebay page popped up, allowed me to enter destination country and update the total, and it also allowed me to continue until ebay "confirm payment" page. I stopped there since I don't want to have an extra SIMMCONN, but it looks to me like they are still available.

E D I T 2 : Now it says sold out!.. What the heck? In any case, sad news indeed. 😢

E D I T 3: I understand now. SIMMCONN Gold is sold out. SIMMCONN Value is still available. So, there is still hope for non-gold AWE64 versions.

I had a similar experience. I emailed the contact on the site. He said he didn't have time to invest in that side business at the moment and his current stock of SIMMCONN Gold PCB's was depleted except for a couple of refurbs had hadn't completed yet. He mentioned he hoped to put some time into it the SIMMCONN product line a little more this summer.

It seems like this is very much a homebrew side-business like many of the efforts we've seen in the retro market. I think our best best is one of two approaches:

  1. Email him and express interest. Perhaps enough demand would spur him to restart.
  2. Failing that asking to release the PCB schematics and supplier info so perhaps someone else can restart the effort if he no longer has interest.

I believe they are already there. Look at the "downloads" section from the main page, or directly from the link below:

Just ordered a SIMMCONN Value 😀
I really hope the Gold will become available soon.
I've got two golds and one other value that need an upgrade 😀

I need to post this here just because this plugin is so awesome!

No you can't. I learnt this when I bought the wrong one 😵

The download link is broken. However, I found it here: http://ru.winamp.com/plugin/aweamp-by-yilard/1839. You should press the big yellow button to download the plugin.

Keep in mind if you don't mess around with Soundfonts the memory size doesn't really matter and the few games that had inbuilt soundfonts were only 512kb as far as I'm aware.

I want to try out those big sound fonts 😁
That was the idea, and also cache for awe-amp 😎

Where can I get the best sound fonts? Does anyone know a good website?
