After doing the list I realized that I have a lot of 80GB+ hard drives. Might try selling a few just to see what happens. Don't really need them anyway and more will be coming along for sure.

Isn't that the infamous "DeathStar"? I had one of those and it died a couple of years after I bought it exactly like it was supposed to. 😢

I have one...in working condition!
Obviously I don't use it for anything though.

I think I've got the 10GB version of that drive in storage. It does still work, unlike a couple of its siblings that I've come across over the years.

And yeah, I'd agree with keeping all drives you have that are under 4GB or so. I've got a nice cache of old hard drives myself (most of them being under 10GB), so whenever one drive in any of my retro systems goes, I can just replace it with ease.

That's interesting. The only chance for that to happen is if you never used it much. Either that or not all of them have the defect that cause them to malfunction.

I only use CF cards for retro machines (pre-Pentiums). I like the speed increase factor. Like SSD's now-a-days 😁

That and the silence 😁 If there was one thing I always hated about computers it's the mechanical HDD.

I'd say just on this forum there are still enough people using real hard drives for whatever reason.
Drives that I would think are in higher demand are the ones that max out a system like 500MB/8GB for example but you will always get the special cases like my 486 which maxes out at 6GB.
And they are going to get rare quicker then any other bit of hardware due to natural deaths plus people destroying them so their data is "safe" Personally I'd pay a few dollars for a 6GB drive even though I can get a 40GB drive for the same price but not able to use the extra space

+1

I don't know how much it had been used as I didn't buy it new. Although even defective products with high failure rates occasionally
make it way longer than most. I don't use it. The only reason I keep it is because of it's reputation.

I think it is either 20 or 40 GB?

--edit--
I guess I could check the power on hours in SMART. I forgot about that
