I did manage to run at 600 MHz but only with a lot of voltage, and all I did was run a few benchmarks. Wasn't worth the trouble.

There's so many people running them at 600MHz that I just think I'm unlucky on this front. It's a 50MHz difference on a CPU that doesn't really scale well beyond 400MHz, but my OCD demands these 50MHz 🤣 .

I bought an Intel DX4 from the same seller, he probably had more than one or we are both scammed. The good thing with there beeing more than one CPU is that perhaps one of us will get a CPU with somewhat streight pins. 😜

The seller seems to earn his money from the shipping cost and not from the auction price. 😀

I've bought from him before and had no problems. The ones I already bought had more straight pins though. Yes, shipping is on the high side.

I just bought this 286 system for 58 euro + 23 euro shipping.
I diddnt buy it for the 286 system inside as I already have two 286 systems Im perfectly happy with.

I built the first system I ever built on my own in exactly the same model of case in November or December 1994, the case wasnt new but came from a ~1990 vintage 386 DX25 system. Im usually not the one to fall victim for nostalgia but in this case I did and I feel no regrets 😀. The 286 system wont go to waste, I will remove the faulty battery, remove any corrosion and either use it to replace one of my current boards if this one seems better or keep it as a spare. The case will house one of my 486 systems, probably one of the faster ones as I intend to keep this case on my desk next to my main 286 system.

I went to collect a free computer today after putting a request out for 'very old computers' on a recycling email list last month and want disappointed. Well I was a bit. From the outside I was hoping for a DX or DX2 but, much to my surprise I found a Pentium 120 inside on a Gemlight(?) motherboard with Dallas RTC. Peripheral items include an OPTi SoundBlaster clone (with IDE and all the proprietary interfaces), a Number Nine Trio64 and a classic CD-ROM drive. What I'm most happy about is the AT case and AT keyboard. Plus because the thing has been in a loft for 15 years, no bromine!

With all the talk about how effing nice this board is here on the forum the last couple of days there was no way the board would go cheap and Im kind of cheap. At least I made sure the winner had to pay close to what I consider the board is worth.

I did NOT buy/win this ASUS VL/I-486SV2GX4, grats to whoever did!

I made a post about a motherboard I diddnt win, perhaps I also should make post about the lot I did win.

I won this lot with random "good to have when the winter sets in" items. The price was ~24 euro + 9 euro shipping. Its the sellers pictures and they are kind of bad, the stuff is all suppsed to work but sold "as is".

This seems to be the typical "my wife thought I had too much stuff so I had to get rid of alot of things really fast or she would threw me out on the street" auction, I really love those. If the seller is a member and Im wrong feel free to correct me 😀.

I got same mobo about a month ago (hunting for few months), only because it has fastest benchmarks on Phil Vga list :)
And supported top (amd x5-133 and podp83) cpu's.

Today got this cache ide controller:
Promise SuperIDE DC-99M (p/n 41209900 rev a)

512kb cache ram onboard (always on), so up to 8192+512 kb cache max.
It's hard to find any info online, so even a th99 has a wrong picture for it.
Compare disk speed on 286 don't give a big difference (but write is faster) . Looks like need retest controller on early 486.

Nice with an ISA IDE controller with cache! It must be perfect for an ISA only 486 system build.

:) As far I know, PVI is not as fast mobo, as possible. Pci-to-vlb bridge is bottleneck.

I know about the inflated price, this board went for 76 euro with memory but no CPU, Im waiting for a cheaper auction ending during work hours in the middle of the week 😉.

I found the PCI performance of the Asus PVI-486SP3 to be rather good eventhough it uses a VLB to PCI bridige but I guess the performane will drop when the VLB slot is in use aswell.

When it comes to PCI boards the Lucky Star LS486E seems sligtly better for me than he Asus PVI-486SP3 as my AMD 5x86 needs 4V to be "Quake stable" at 160 MHz which the Asus board cant provide. Im trading for another CPU which with luck dosnt need this much voltage, the one I have isnt even stable at 133MHz with 3.3V/3.45V on any board I tried, it needs 3.6V to run Quake even at stock speed. The CPU came with an "untested" Abit PB4 board I bought and sat 90 degrees wrong in the socket when I got it so its a wonder it even works at all.
