Custom, when compared to that of car's, makes me wonder still. Actually it should just be something like no-brand or noname (just like unbranded floppy disks were marketed as in the 90's). For living up to the term custom, I think it should go a lot deeper. Like doing a one of the kind paintjob and choosing parts that have a specific color. You know... All about look's.

I like the term "Frankenstein" wich I think have been taken a bit further here on Vogons. You all know... Franken-PC or something.

For the food thing. I have been told on numerous time, that hamburgers were mislabeled. Because they contain's no ham.
Ham??!!!? Seriously?? 😳 I believe a different story that was told to me. (wich I suspect is the true one)

That German emmigrants, living on the harbours of New York, sold buns with the burger-meat in it.
Times went by, and it was refined throughout USA to the point of an average standard burger of today.
And during the second world war, the burger as we know it, followed the American soldier's back to Europe.

Actually... The idea of the burger, are over 1900 years old. It is an old roman recipie from Italy.
A senator described fastfood that was sold during the evening, when rich people went to the theatre.
One such meal, was a bun with meat in it. That consisted of 50% minched meat and 50% chopped pine nuts.
It was described in eighter aprox 100 AD or 100 BC.

So burgers.... Well... Italian food, exported to Usa by Germans from Hamburg (hence the name) refined and
exported back to Europe in 1944/46.

Yup. The term that caught on early for those boxes is 'casemod'.

The car-use is an extreme example. The term is also simply used for any individualized product or service. Something other than what is offered on the menu or brochure or catalog, per a customer request, is a custom order.

The term is commonplace among watch collectors. Specifically, and appropriately, it means a unique watch that is made by combining parts from dead watches in one's collection. Among purist collectors a "frankenwatch" is a bad thing, among others it's an enjoyable pastime. Seiko mods got popular a few years back, and the term frankenstein kinda spread from there.

The car/pc analogy does not work with custom. To have an equivalent you should buy a branded PC and then casemod it, then you'd have a custom pc.
Are there any homemade cars?

To an extent. They are called kit-cars. Though you in some cases need a doner-car to get some parts.
As far as I know, it''s about the legal state of things. Especially in Europe.

TELEPACMAN, do not misunderstand me. The "custom car" example is meant as an illustration of how the term is used, not as a strict analogy.

homemade cars?

When I was younger these were almost always called "kit cars", and you certainly saw them around.

EDIT: hah - brostenen slips in first!

I grew up in Nowra NSW during the mid 90's-00's and never came across the term but then I didn't know about Yam Cha (as in the restaurants) till moving to Sydney in 02.
I usually call them White box, no name, generic PC. I'm not sure which terms I picked up from Oz and which ones from the UK.

Originally from the UK, but grew up in Sydney 😀 I didn't know much about yum cha until I started dating 🤣 will have to dig up some old early 90s magazines to see what the articles and ads say, though they would no doubt refer to clones as 'IBM compatibles'.

Yeah... Then imagine "kit-hellicopter's" and "kit-areoplanes"... (yes they do exist)
Naa... There was a vet' that made a series about building a kit-car, on discovery, a few years back.
He did the (perhaps) ultimate kit-car of them all... E-Type

There was a guy who built a homemade replica of a Lamborghini in his basement. Of course, when he was done he had to somehow get it out of the basement. Solution was to excavate and knock a hole out of the basement wall.

I'm relatively confident that 99% of Australians use the term "Junk" or "Trash" and that's probably why many of us in the past have found cool retro hardware on their front kurb on bin day or at the rubbish dump.
