question, on a 430hx motherboard, does it matter where the hdd goes. I tried to put it on the secondary channel and won't auto detect(but will if done manually). it will pick up my dvd drive on that channel with no issues. tried the other channel and auto detects just fine. Is it just picky?

Probably a BIOS limitation in that it only expects the boot drive to be the primary master. You might be lucky and find there's a BIOS upgrade for the board which addresses the issue.
