So glad they finally decided to get rid of those box-art's. I found them, mildly speaking, discusting and nausiating. Back in and around 2005. The actual hardware is a different story. I like my art crafted into the design of the actual thing it self, I guess. Nothing like a beautifull crafted GPU fan and heatsink.
I just hate robo-chicks on a box, this discourages me from buying the thing it self.

It's just too bad that article didn't venture farther back enough for this beauty (and instead focusing mostly on the post-2002 sex appeal stuff from Taiwanese companies)

Also honorable mention goes to the cgi nude borg queen on the Matrox M3D box, doing it for 3d cards before it was cool

Selling hardware with sex, are not cool, indeed.
Older box art are way more cool, like Voodoo boxes.
The ultimate would be something like flying shark's with lasers. Or big ass explosions. Even an bannana are more cool than manga chicks with fake breasts.

That was a fun read...well..more seeing the box art. Personally I never minded the box art, even if it's skinny ladies in cracked up frogsuits or whatever.

I'd never not buy a product if the box art was crap, as long as the hardware inside of it was what I wanted and this I'd often have thoroughly investigated so I knew very well what I wanted. I actually hardly ever noticed the box art as I was mostly interested in the model numbers and other stats the boxes would provide.

Box art is kinda one of the last things I notice, I find it more important whether the box itself is sturdy enough and has the right dimensions for holding memory modules or whatever else I needed at the moment 😁.

The thing I wasn't liking that much was the tone of the article, it had some ridiculing tone which I didn't like very much. I do appreciate having seen all these pics though.

I can't even think of a box that did have an anime character. Not even NEC's PC 3D engine box had anything but shapes

The Apocalypse 3D has your big ass explosion though 😀

The 'good-looking' design came mostly when the focus shifted to gamers on hardware components. Earlier stuff was targeted much more for professional use and designed alike. Some hardware came even in a simple white box. Very common was that there is simply a sketch of some PCB board in the background.

Anyways, moving on, this one isn't too bad I suppose, but it always makes me feel uneasy and gives me nightmares;

The crappy 90s scanner doesn't do it justice. It's something with the eyes, they're freaky, Then again, blue eyes freak me out anyway, bloody weirdos, it's not normal... Man I have issues or something. 😁

The card itself was just a re-labelled CMI8738 (With a high price tag, £59.99 and I have the receipt) and does nothing worthwhile. Anybody know what chip the PSC705 had? I was interested in that back when I bought this as it claimed to have FM synthesis as well as a wavetable, so all I can think is it was either another 8738 or a YMF7XX (It was 6 channel and retailed at ~£70), it did have less offensive box art at least;
Actually, it was ahead of its time; 😜

I probably have more and I shall scan them if I find them, or take photos once my battery gets here.
