As some of you knows, I am trying to set up a period correct system based on socket 940 Opteron dual core 285.

Re: My SupaDupa single 940 System

I managed to find an HR-05 SLI finally, so the clearance for the VGA is solved.

During my search for the Thermalright, I stumbled across a beautiful Asus K8N-DL and I couldn't resist to buy it (25€).
The Asus doesn't have two PCiexpress x16 slots, so SLI is not an option, BUT it has two sockets and I already own two Opteron 285 (and two Silencer 64).

So the question is obvious: is an SLI system better than a quad core (total) one?

Personally I think that even though the Foxconn SLi card is really sexy, the Asus is the more reliable and capable motherboard.
Two Opterons for a total of quad cores can deploy enough power even for recent software and I always can use a 9800GX2 to simulate a period correct SLI.

What do you think?

I'd rate a 2 CPU system over a SLI system for cool points. Mainly cause its less common
I'd rate a SLI system over 2 CPU's for usefulness, as games don't take advantage of multiple CPU's

If it was me, I would build the SMP system
