I've been having some serious trouble trying to connect my 486 with Windows for Workgroups 3.11 to my server running Windows XP via my local network. The latter is password protected which is mandatory for me. I've searched on Google and have gotten very few results pertaining to this problem. Tried without password, usernames are all the same, and removed NETBEUI and IPX/SPX protocols. No dice. Any suggestions?

Maybe you ned to edit some policies on the XP machine that it accepts the Win3.x Machine.

Does it work without Password?

I think i remember Some windows versions send the password complete in lower or upper case. Can you try small Password like "pass" or "PASS" or "123" for Test.

BTW: I don't like the Windows File Sharing (SMB) cause it gives me data corruption on transfered files. 🙁 On big Files transfered there are some Bits near the End wrong. (Did a Binary check with FC /b )

So i would prefer setting up an FTP Server on Windows XP (Filezilla Server for example) and use WsFTP or FilezillaClient on Windows 3.11.

I run the FTPserver on my Fritzbox-Router to transfer files between my PCs.

Or to have Drivers and Must-Have Software (Winrar,Directx,Sound and Graphics Drivers) ready..

The farthest that I've tried with policies is that I have set permissions for the user. Again, the usernames are all the same. And I even tried adding a username like "//486/<username>" and it doesn't accept it.

Plus, I have tried shorter passwords since WFW 3.11 can only accept up to 8 characters. Doesn't even patch through no matter what I do.

Can you ping the XP machine from your WFW machine? It would probably be a good idea to rule out lower-level problems first.

You've enabled NETBIOS over TCP/IP on the XP machine, right?

I think there's some setting regarding LM hashes that you have to change, but the precise details escape me.

I've just double checked with my XP SP3 and WFW PC's
Both can find each other fine, Windows firewall is on with default rules, Both shares are with Full access rights.
As mentioned above each PC can also ping each other both by name and IP.
Pretty sure I haven't done any reg hacks on XP either, (think that is more for vista and above)

WFW has TCP/IP 3.11B installed as well as IPX/SPX Compatible with NetBIOS
WinXP just has TCP
Both are set to DHCP (my router)

Both are in the same workgroup (workgroup) No password on the WFW but XP does have a password

Hope that helps!
In the past I've had more luck using IP addresses rather then the hostname, and can sometimes get to the WFW PC by going \\WFW IP address from XP where as the WFW PC still cant see the XP PC even though I'm copying files to it!

As chinny22 said, XP and WFW 3.11 do work very well together (once you've found the right settings).
Had them connected in a network a few years ago. No issues with sharing, newtork drives.
