@James-F

Just to be sure - I'm new here that's why I'm asking. 😀
You can see description under photo I've added? Or is it just for my information and other users doesn't sees it?

I think his comment was directed @ bishopcop, not you. 😀

Yep, it's a Gravis Ultrasound PnP pro. It has an AMD Interwave chip (there are only a few other cards that use this tech). Haven't tested it yet so not sure if it works(it should) but I got it for very cheap. My apologies for the lack of description, I was a bit excited about the card and forgot to post one.

I see ULTRASOUND, so Gravis Ultrasound?

What was that about common knowledge? 🤣

Sorry, couldn't help myself because of your comment in the Sound Blaster thread 😊

Not to mention that on the card in the picture, to the right of ULTRASOUND it says ADVANCED GRAVIS COMPUTER TECHNOLOGY LTD COPYRIGHT 1995. 😀

Maybe it's just me but I think it would be safe to bet that it's a Gravis Ultrasound indeed.

My comment was more general and not specifically for this card or poster.

Take this post for example: HERE. Finally..... what the hell is that I ask right after his post?
The common knowledge needed to identify this card is far from common.
It'll just be more convenient to actually know what is in the picture for youngsters among us. 😁

🤣 Na fair enough.

It's just that the GUS (short for Gravis Ultrasound) is such an iconic card, very recognisable because, AFAIK it's the only, or one of the few, red sound card. It's also hard to find these days, costs a fortune and basically killed Gravis financially.

Sorry to barge in, I just wanted to say that I actually know that now, but up to a few years ago (when I started browsing this very forum) I had never seen one and the only thing I knew about such cards was that they were an option in some games.

So it's not that far-fetched to think that some people may not recognize what is being shown in the pictures. I agree that people should identify what's being shown, as obvious as it may seem to them. It also doesn't help that some pictures are huge and cut off and we can't see the whole thing in the first place.

I agree, I was just poking James for his "Single cycle DMA" is common knowledge comment in another thread 😀

For XXXL images, right click on it > open image in new tab. Or zoom out with CTRL + mouse wheel. Or just attach to the message and it will do some resizing for you, or use cloud storage like imgur.

Nothing to do with the GUS itself or about posting photos without description, only about red sound card PCBs: It's not 😉 Of course you can't mistake them for a GUS, but many-many ESS and OPTi cards came in red PCB. For some reason it was a thing in the late 90s-early 2000s, didn't last long. Check out one of our own threads for example, I'm sure there are plenty of pics like this one: Isa sound card Opti931 no sound

If you ask me, it should be fairly common knowledge how and what a GUS looks like.
If not in other places, then at least here and on other vintage hardware forum's.
Is it me, or am I expecting too much? 😉

That be said, I understand if people have a hard time figuring out what a rare 8-bit
ISA mem card is. Or something else like that.

Did you just say you wanted to help people identify rare ISA memory cards? I have good news my sweet prince. I can fulfill that fantasy. Here are 2 exhibits that have puzzled me for the past 2 years.

Exhibit 1:

1.jpg

It came in a box marked "Kouwell" but apart from that I have no information about it. Note that the card itself says "Kouwei"
Box:

It has 2 banks (or is it 1 bank?) filled with 2x9 4164 chips. I played with the DIP switches for a while but couldn't figure out what they do. I have no software for it either.

Exhibit 2:

2.jpg

I have no information whatsoever about this card. As you see from the full size pics below, it has 2 PCBs connected together in a sandwich manner. Has 10x9 chips on the top PCB and as many on the lower one. The chips are all HM50256 (256kx1bit, so a total of about 4.5MB). No box, software or other information.

Ahhh... Not exactly. I said that I understand if people do not know what a specific 8bit-ISA memcard is.
Did not say that I want to identify it, bacause XT systems is something I do not know about. 😉
