According to the wikipedia, there are 3 versions of this card, https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Sound_Blaster#S … d_Blaster_AWE64.

The main difference is the size of the RAM on the card. Does this RAM control the size of the soundfonts for the card?

Yes. Why you would think otherwise?

Add-on RAM modules for the AWE64 are very uncommon; while homebrew adapters for SIMM modules exist, they are also hard to come by. If you want to use soundfonts with an ISA card, you may be better off with an AWE32 or a Goldfinch card.

Actually, the Wikipedia page is incorrect. There are only two versions of the card (in terms of onboard memory), namely a 512KB version and a 4MB version (the latter being the AWE64 Gold) - refer this page: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Sound_Blaster_AWE64.

And yes, the size of the soundfonts that you load into memory is determined by how much RAM you have onboard (take note that this is independent of the 1MB of compressed samples that are stored in ROM on the card).

You had the option to expand the onboard RAM to a maximum of 32MB (although, the maximum addressable memory is 28MB) by purchasing the rather expensive Creative proprietary memory modules.
There were some third party mods available, that allowed you to either use standard 30-pin simms or a 72-pin simm, but as Jorhpo has stated, these are no longer being produced and are also becoming very rare.

Okay, the AWE32 and Soundblaster 32 topped off at 28 MB RAM, yes?

The size of the Utopia Live! soundfont back in the day was 32 MB was it not?

Also, the Soundblaster AWE64 digital is a PCI card and is not mentioned on the wikipedia page here https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Sound_Blaster#S … d_Blaster_AWE64.

There is a better page for AWE64-specific stuff, which has already been mentioned.

I have no idea which soundfont you may be referring to, but it is quite possible it was intended for the SB Live! and later cards, which loaded soundfonts into system RAM.
