So finally I made my perfect setup dos machine. Pentium 100Mhz.
It has very nice compact case, so only one PCI card can fit. I put Gravis Ultra Sound - works great with trackers, players, demos... but almost no support for dos games.
Friend told me, that he had SB emulation on GUS back in the day. How to make it? How to play SB games with GUS only?
Go into the ultrasnd directory on your C drive - you should find two programs there that enable SB-compatibility - sbdos.exe and megaem.exe . Launch one or the other.
It's called SBOS.EXE. MEGAEM.EXE is an emulator for Sound Canvas/MT-32.
Both can help for better support in games.
I have to warn you though, SBOS.EXE isn't very good. MEGAEM generally works quite well.
If the SB emulation is not perfect, this makes the GUS not a great card as a single card for a wide range of DOS games. A better option would be an AWE64 or, if you are not a fan of Creative's FM/synth implementations - a good OPL3 card + MIDI daughterboard via wavetable header, like the Audician 32 Plus + Dreamblaster S1/X1.

Actually, the best option is probably the GUS Extreme, which contains an ESS AudioDrive for OPL3/SB Pro compatibility.
Also, the GUS is probably the most widely misunderstood sound card ever.
Gamers don't get it, it's mostly a demoscener card.
