Hi guys, in order to build a ultra fast w98 rig, wich bord should I buy?
Asrock 775Dual-Vsta
Asrock 775V8
Asrock 775VM800
Asrock 775i65G
Asus P5GD2-X

Locally each one costs 15€ + pp

Thanks

None. For Windows 98 it's a waste of time and money...

Windows XP came out in 2001. Anything 2002/3 will be kickass for W98. Why going for a 2006 machine?

But if you MUST build one I would choose 775i65G.

Building such a system just for 98 is just a waste but if you were doing a XP/Vista or Retro 7 box then that is a good start plus 2006 was an epic year for pc master race 😉

On a far away planet reading your posts in the year 10,191.

15€ isn't expensive, but how much will the other parts be?
As for which I'd choose for a computer, here are the websites I found with the motherboard specs.

http://www.asrock.com/mb/VIA/775Dual-VSTA/
http://www.asrock.com/MB/VIA/775V88/ ( I couldn't find 775V8 only 775V88 )
http://www.asrock.com/mb/VIA/775VM800/
http://www.asrock.com/mb/intel/775i65g/
https://www.asus.com/Motherboards/P5GD2X/

The Asrock boards have 8x AGP slots, but the Asus has PCI-e for graphics.
I don't think Windows 98 supports PCI-e graphics cards, so that leaves the Asrock boards.

The 775Dual-VSTA and 775V88 motherboards have more RAM slots than the other two Asrock boards.
You may not need more than two RAM slots for Windows 98, but I like having them anyway.

I like the color of the 775V88 better, but the 775Dual-VSTA will support more processors and allows a higher FSB setting. I don't know if Windows 98 can take advantage of it though.
Decide which processor you want (what's cheapest where you live). If you want a Core 2 Duo, you probably want the 775Dual-VSTA. But make sure there are Windows 98 drivers for the board.
I only find Windows 98 drivers for the 77V88 on the Asrock site, but maybe there is a workaround.

People have managed to run Windows 98 on some fast computers.
Check this thread.
Fastest pc you have win98 on? (besides emulation)

I would recommend the 775 Dual-VSTA. It supports a wide range of processors. Dual booting between 98se and XP, 7 or Linux would allow you to actually download drivers, safely web browse, and play later games on the same pc with a simple reboot.

Main pc: Asus ROG 17. R9 5900HX, RTX 3070m, 16gb ddr4 3200, 1tb NVME.
Retro PC: Soyo P4S Dragon, 3gb ddr 266, 120gb Maxtor, Geforce Fx 5950 Ultra, SB Live! 5.1

If the 775i65G is a Revision 3.0, (it has a black PCB instead of a blue one), then go with it, buy an Intel Dual Core E5800, 2x512MB sticks of DDR400 RAM, GeForce 6800 Ultra/6800 GT/Radeon X800 XT/X850 XT/X850 XT PE GPU, and you have the best of the best without any tweaking or paid patches. That's the easy route.

If it's not, go with the 775Dual-VSTA, and ask agent_x007 here about all the details, he knows the highend 98SE ASRock builds better than I ever could. Do note you need an extra sound card, as the built in one doesn't have 98SE drivers, unlike the 775i65G.

PS. No, it's not a waste of time, I ran 98SE on my main ASUS X75VB laptop, with an i3-3230M, and with tweaking (VBEMP) it was almost usable 😀 And the NDIS2 network drivers worked!
You can run 98SE on the latest Z270 chipsets and 7700K CPU, providing the MoBo supports legacy mode (or Win7 mode as it's called under MSI MoBo's for example), that's all there's to it.
It's pointless, but fun! Isn't VOGONS all about fun?

Should be fine with certain cards but not very many... Geforce 6000 series, AMD X100 series, and Geforce 7000 series and (possibly) AMD X1000 series should also work as far as I know. Inf-modded drivers for the 7000 series.

Another Win9x note: If you're going for > 256MB memory, make sure you use 98SE with the "unofficial SP3" patch which includes some memory-related fixes.

I'm not sure how high Win9x driver support goes for Via chipsets but for Intel chipsets you're good up through (including) 915. (You don't always necessarily need all the chipset drivers to use a system, but it depends on the specific hardware.)

Yes, I always ramble this much.
