hi everyone i wanto know what is the max cpu i can put on my old pentium 1 aptiva 2176-f31
according to a quick google search it only supports the 200mhz non mmx pentium.
course pentium 1's are so cheap you might as well buy a few and just put them in and see if they work. keep in mind even if some faster ones are compatible they might actually perform slower so run benchmarks to make sure.
thx for your help gonna try to find a 200 non mmx
You might get a K6-III+ working in it, if you can find one of the old Socket 7 upgradge sockets sold by i think powerleap or upgradeware, they have an onboard voltage regulator so can go low as well as split the voltage.

my motherboard is a p54c can i put this p55c in it?
I'm using a Pentium 233 MMX in my Aptiva 2176 (SiS 5500 chipset)
Officially the board only supports up to 200 non-MMX, but my 233 runs fine. I have a big heatsink/fan on it because it's running at a higher voltage than intended, but it's no trouble. Only issue is, the IBM BIOS doesn't recognise the chip and so it gives me a system board error each boot, but it's just one enter key to continue and then it boots up at full speed with MMX instructions working fine
good to know maybee gonna try it

You set the multiplier to 1.5x to get 3.5x 66 = 233
Be sure to use a decent heatsink, one from a Coppermine S370 CPU is good enough as is one intended for a K6-2 or K6-3 CPU.

thx for the info if the 233 mmx work so the amd k2 333 gonna work?

Only with a socket adapter equipped with a VRM that brings the votage down to 2.2 - 2.4V (and there are no guarantees). The K6-2 can't handle 3.3V while the Pentium MMX can handle 3.3V without other issues than producing more heat than it does at 2.8V.

Yes like that one. 😀
With luck you can get 400 (6x66) MHz if you exchange that CPU for a K6-2 400 (or better).
It's the socket adapter "you are paying for" when buying such an item as K6-2 CPUs are cheap as chips.

do this price is good or overpriced ?dont know it!
maybee gonna buy a 233 and later a k6

I dont know either. I guess the price is probably a bit high but these adapters are not very common and that one seems to at least support voltages as low as 2.2V as it's intended for a K6-2 (or Pentium MMX).

wich kind of heatsink fit in these

Socket 7, Socket A and Socket 370.
With a Socket A or Socket 370 heatsink clearance around the CPU socket can be an issue.

Its worth bearing in mind the Aptiva 2176 boards (at least mine) only supports an FSB of 50 - 66mhz and multiplier up to 3x, with 66 FSB and using the 1.5x (IBM calls it 3/2) multiplier you can hit the full 233 for the Pentium 233 MMX, but I'm not sure about the K6-2's (never played with those, yet!)

You will get 6x with a CXT core K6-2 by using the 2x multiplier.
I don't know if the board will work with a K6-2 but if the BIOS lets you bypass the "non identified CPU error" with an Pentium MMX it's likely it also will let you do it with a K6-2.
The socket adapter with VRM is really needed though as 3.3V can kill a K6-2 rather quickly.

I have an IBM aptiva which originaly came with a pentium MMX 233. But what was my surprise when I opened it to see that it have been "upgraded" with a K6-2 500 ... though no jumpers were changed so that CPU ran probably for years at 2.9V and only at 233MHz. Fortunately the poor thing didn't die, but yeah, I wonder what was the reaction to the previous owner not seing his computer running faster. Maybe he had the placebo effect ?

just got the amd 333 with the socket adapter gonna try it later 😀
