I noticed my motherboard for my "vintage pc rig" can accept usb but the pin out is the board is 8-pins and the closest I find on net for rear panel usb is 9 pins and wondering if that will still work

It will work, 9th pin is just a key for direction and is connected to ground or unused. The pinout for MB USB header remained the same since the dawn of USB (5V+ D- D+ GND NC). Just try not to swap 5V+ with GND.

Yes, if you want to avoid swapping 5V+ with GND, you will want to make sure it is the right way around.

Often one side of the cable is colored red, which corresponds to whatever pin is numbered "1" on the motherboard.

I seem to recall some using opposing arrangements of the two rows, and others using same way arrangement
