Hello
Does a TDP=9W processor need a heat sink ? ( No thermal sensor on motherboard )
- What TDP is the max.that CPU needs a heat sink and what TDP is the max.that it needs a fan also ?
- For example my AMD 64 TDP=59W has a small heat sink+fan and it's temperature is only max.30*C.

So if wattage is 6x lower then temperature is 6x lower ?

My pentium 200 has TDP of ~16W. After a few minutes with just a 43x43x16mm heatsink it hard locks itsself or throws errors. Heatsink is too hot to touch.

I once had a Riva 128 card ( Diamond Viper 330 ) with did the same thing - after an hour or so of 3d gaming it could hard lock itsself which, in Windows 98 meant system reset. I jury rigged a heatsink for it and problem was solved.

So - it is always a good idea to cool electronics.

Dx33 at 4W needs no HSF but Dx2/4 at 5/6W do so 9W likely does.

Pentium 133 is the fastest chip I run w/o a fan and that is 12W but this depends on case ventilation a lot my build is in an archaic AT case with no flow.

Just put a heatsink on it /face palm
9w can produce a lot of heat should that heat be concentrated enough in a small spot as it can certainly destroy the device.

Cool chips are happy chips. They'll thank you by running longer.

The important question is: what case are you putting it in?
If you put it in a case with a decent airflow design, and a casefan, then that is probably more than enough.
But if there is little or no airflow in the case, then the heat will build up, and can eventually cause problems (if there is no airflow, then a heatsink won't help either).

I agree. I wouldn't concentrate on what cpus have to have a heat sink. Even cpus that produce less heat and work fine without one are better off while having one. It also isn't just about tdp, you also have to consider how the cpu has been made internally and how it has been designed to dissipate heat. There are mobile pentium III cpus with 7W tdp, but I would never attempt to run one without cooling.

all computer components do not like heat, especially electrolytic capacitors, and all components and solder joits do not like heting and cooling, expanding and shrinking, so a rule of thumb is to cool your equpment, ecpecially if it is some retro stuff. So that about covers it all.

I am aroused about any X86 motherboard that has full functional ISA slot. I think i have problem. Not really into that original (Turbo) XT,286,386 and CGA/EGA stuff. So just a DOS nut.
PS. If I upload RAR, it is a 16-bit DOS RAR Version 2.50.
