So, I'm wondering what is your dream retro PC, preferably one that is in your possession, or if that's not the case, one that could be assembled cheaply.
I'm asking this for two reasons:
1st, I'm really curious about what each of you considers a great build.
2nd,I'm going to have to downsize a bit, and I need to choose 2 or 3 PC's so I can cover most old games. So I'm taking inspiration from the builds that you choose.
I currently have one of those, and note that by retro I don't really mean is has to be period correct or have really old parts. Mine for example is composed of:
- Gigabyte GA-8I865GME-7775-RH: Intel 865, AGP, MicroATX, 2 SATA + 2IDE. Has W98 drivers for most stuff. Had an unsoldered SBLink header.
- Intel Core 2 Quad Q6600: Why not? Also I boot a LiveXP or a Win10 CD whenever I need something really quick off the internet ,or when copying large amounts (> 2gb 🤣) to the internal disk.
- 500GB SATA HDD - I went a bit overkill on this one.
- GeForce FX5200 AGP 128MB: wasn't sure I had anything better for Win98/DOS. Runs most stuff @ 1024x768 fine.
- Yamaha YMF724 PCI sound card: works fine for Win98. Should be a great card for DOS according to what I read around here. Also works perfectly with my Roland SC-55 mk1.
I'm in the process of installing most of my Win98 games on it. And after I'm going to try and fiddle with the DOS games. So this is building up to be my Win98 Dream Machine. If the DOS games won't play nicely (maybe even if they do...) I'm going to build/pick a DOS Machine and maaaaybe a WinXP machine.
Alas, I digress... Which is/are your dream machine?
