I recently bought a USR model 5686E serial modem on ebay without a power supply. The datasheet for this model specifies that the power supply be a 9Vac type. However, on the model 5686G--which looks identical--the power supply is described as a 9Vdc type. Before I discovered this, I did plug a 9V dc supply into it, and it did power on. I didn't get a chance to actually try it out yet, but I'm wondering if using a DC supply will damage the unit? Any help would be appareciated. Thanks.

You won't damage it but most likely it won't work.
AC is required to generate RS232 voltages on such modems.
The DC model should generate them with additional hardware
while the other should need just some diodes and some caps.
