As a part-time Amiga gamer, I’ve been spoiled with the plethora of great joysticks available.

For my Win98 PC I have a Sidewinder Precision Pro which is nice for simulator type games (TIE Fighter, Wing Commander etc), but it stinks for anything else where a more arcade style control is necessary.

Can anyone recommend a decent controller (gameport) that is Win98 friendly and that can be used for platform games? I’d prefer a joystick to a game pad, but I would consider a gamepad if that’s the best way to go.

How about Logitech Wingman Extreme? An old mid-90's joystick. Another that I have on my mind, is CH Flightstick.

I could be wrong .. but I seem to have read that there is a way to use the xbox 360 USB joypad with windows98. it is very well built.

Perhaps this is something you have been thinking about:

Else...
If the one called Speedlink Strike NX is compatible with Win98, then it is an absolute solid choice.
I have one for my RetroPIE setup, and I must admit that it feels way better than both Xbox and Playstation controllers.
It is solid, precise and just the right weight.

How about analogue arcade-style controllers for DOS games?

Something like the old Competition Pro or ZipStick, there must be something decent out there.

Is there an adapter that will allow you connect a 9pin Amiga joystick to a 15pin gameport? I've only found ones that do the opposite so far.

I bought one around 2005, and it lasted for a couple of years.

Thanks brostenen - That joystick would be perfect but it's USB sadly and won't work in pure DOS (unless there's a way that I'm not aware of?).

Maybe I'll get one for Windows games though 😀

Ahhh... You meant gameport all the time? I thought it was for Dos games, that are running through Win98. Sorry...
