There's no "notch" in the end like typical ICs. I'm assuming the notch would be to the left when chip text is in normal orientation (as in this photo) but I dont really have any idea...

Maybe you could try checking if there's a short between pin 1 & 20? I think they should both be Gnd. On the other side they'd be Vcc and Reset.
[edit: Ah, scratch that, apparently they're not connected internally]

Thanks. That was my assumption, Keropi, but before I installed it I wanted to be certain...
just FYI , that embossed line across the chip (or in another form a slanted edge) indicates the side where pin1 is
the pic makes it look like this chip has both the stripe and slanted edge but it could be just the angle
Yeah, it might. I didn't know about the hslant edge, didn't notice it on mine, that's just a photo I found on the internet.
