I have HP Vectra QS/16S Intel 386. I am trying to get a IDE Compact Flash drive working . This HP system has a floppy disk loading BIOS settings program. In the BIOS, you need to initialize hard drives
When you try to initialize a hard drive it has you pick from a list of proprietary HP hard drive types by #, with pre filled capacity, cylinders, heads, sectors, etc.

The BIOS for the QS is picky and only accepts disks types from 1 to 47.. I cannot set manually the heads and sectors...

I can pick from the list type #1, I don't recall what specs are pre chosen but, I can boot with no errors. Use fdisk to access partition and it shows the drive and I can format at 2gb. I then try to install dos 6.22. It gets all the way to 99% and I get a hard drive write fail.

Does anyone have experience with these Vectra systems and adding an ide compact flash drive?

If you can't specify the HDD parameters in the BIOS but only select from pre-defined types, your best chance is to install some dynamic drive overlay software (DDO).
That would be the easiest/quickest way, another solution would be the XTIDE bios.
