I would like to make a fast and quiet Windows 98 PC that will also dabble with DOS gaming. I have a PCI Yamaha YMF724 sound card for sound duties (alongside a couple of soundblaster ISA cards for slower builds) but I am not sure where to go for the motherboard and CPU.

I have a S478 PC and the main thing that puts me off using it a lot is heat and noise. I have a PCI-E 939 board that takes AM2/3 heatsinks just fine for low heat and noise but I don't really want to go into PCI-E for Windows 98 builds.

So I want to get a 754 or 939 AGP based board for Windows 98 gaming and use one of my quiet AM3 heatsinks. Hopefully it would also have Cool & Quiet and a couple of fan headers with some form of speed control. What sort of chipset is best for this that would allow the sound card to work in DOS?

I would probably be pairing this with 512MB RAM and a 5900XT so I don't need support for the fastest CPUs going. I have a 3200 Venice CPU I could use for a 939 build.
