What I getting at is the software perform the entire emulation of a hardware on the main CPU just like a WinModem dose.

A WinModem involves software processing of a digitally-converted audio signal provided by the hardware. What analogous process happens with a NIC?

(The typical NIC really doesn't have much circuity at all on it these days.)
