so...
4) To be fair, with an ISA bus at 18MHz+ it will be hard to find a sound card working, also with sound the performance will be lower.

COVOX (parallel DAC) sound cards should work fine with this mode, also Sound Blaster cards on Direct Mode should work fine. I've tested those modes on a 13MHz bus fine without issues. Maybe 18MHz+ bus is another story, never have pushed so far.

In my opinion the SXL40 and SXL2-50 in PGA form are uncommon, not rare. The DRx2-33/66 is rare.
There were a 4 or 5 SXL(2)-40/50 chips that sold on CPU world just a few days ago. I think the price range was $15-$35.

Here's my notes from another thread where I tested doom with different cache settings-- Looks like your record is pretty safe from my scores. Re: 486DLC cache coherency blues and headaches

I recently sent away to get some thermal tape to attach a heatsink to my 486slc. Should arrive one of these months. Chip runs hot.

I have this mobo https://www.ultimateretro.net/en/motherboards/3688 with an ISA ATI Mach64

Notes:

  • All bench marks are with Hidden Refresh, 0 wait state, 10Mhz ISA bus, 40Mhz CPU
  • -e enabled the onchip cache, -e- disabled the on-chip cache
  • -k (Ken) slowed things down a lot, -f (Flush) and -b (Barb) had little to no impact. Probably need to mod the board to get any impact there.
  • Going from 0KB L2 to 32KB cache has a bigger impact than 32KB to 256KB L2 cache. Common knowledge there, I guess.
  • The Cyrix was faster in DOOM with the L1 disabled & 32KB L2 cache than it was with 1KB L1 cache enabled and the L2 disabled.
  • Doom can take advantage of bigger caches while most DOS synthetic CPU benchmarks fit pretty well in a 32KB cache

In case someone has Ti486SXL or Ti486SXL2 PGA132 and wants to configure or tweak it properly. Here is cache486.exe - just want to put it here so I have it at hand 😉
