If setting to SCSI worked, that means your drive is connected to a HightPoint HPT366 controller on your motherboard, not the VIA standard IDE controller integrated into your board's south bridge .

Glad it worked .

Hmm that’s weird because it says IDE1 on the port. What is a HPT-366 controller for? I have a dual cpu socket 370 motherboard unlike the Asus one i had before this has support for less ram, 4 ide ports and an ISA port.

Epox D3VA
https://www.anandtech.com/show/816/8

It provides extra IDE ports, in this case faster ATA100 ones compared to the VIA ATA66 ones .

According to the manual, the 2 HPT366 controlled IDE ports are the blue ones on the photo (black on some board revision) by the RAM slots . The manual says they should be labelled 3 and 4 . They might be labelled differently on your board (would not be the first time a manual is not 100% accurate).

Oh ok my hard drive is connected to the black and white port. Since i built a multiboot system. I wanted to know how to select what i want to boot into. After playing around with the settings again nothing boots up. I’m stuck on bios. Where as with my Asus board i was able to select what to boot into.

IDE 1: 160gb for XP aswell as DVD drive
IDE 2: 120gb for 98SE
IDE 3: 500 gb HDD set to slave
IDE 4: DVD drive
I did put more ram sticks in aswell plug in the 98SE harddrive and i’ve reset the bios. I did remove the ramstick and i’ve unplug the hdd for 98. Didn’t make a difference.

Looks like i got XP to boot but it shows up on the AGP gpu and then on my PCI GPU. I installed XP with the bios set to PCI should have set it to AGP.

Does the BIOS see the harddrive on the built-in VIA IDE controller ?

Yes it see’s everything but XP is crashing after i set the bios to use my main gpu. Edit it’s because of my ram. So i’m left with Windows 98 how do i boot into it. It’s connected to the second ide port.

Did you try safe mode ?

Also, make sure to use only one stick of RAM and do one pass of Memtest86 on that stick. (to rule out RAM issues)

Yes it was the ram. It’s now stable. The 2 512’s work so i removed 256 and 128mb of ram and it works. But i just need to set up 98. It was already installed but i cannot boot into it. I remember on my Asus CUV4X-D . I could just select a drive to boot into.

Were you doing some kind of dual booting with XP ?

Or you just changed the boot order in the BIOS whenever you needed Win 98?

Yes i want it to be dual boot XP and 98. I will try to reinstall 98SE.

You said Win98 was already installed, did you have a dual boot config at the time of installation?

If so, Win 98's MBR is probably missing. You can fix that with fdisk /mbr from a Windows 98 boot disk (sometimes it works).

Make sure to disconnect other drives when doing this.

Looks like there is no need for that 98 works just fine no need for a reinstall.
