You'd be surprised... the Pentium MMX was massively overengineered, particularly the later OPGA versions. It was capped at 233MHz for marketing reasons (not to compete with Pentium 2), not technical limitations. Same goes (to a lesser degree) for the i430TX chipset. Keeping the cacheable limit the same on a 1997 chipset its 1995 ancestor had had, while competitors happily cached four or eight times as much, had nothing to do with technical bottlenecks or even cost by this time, it was purely to ensure anyone who needed more than 64MB RAM would buy a P2. So I for one have no issues whatsoever to play a game of 'what if...' with theses CPUs 😉
