Hi all,

I just installed an old 50mb quantum drive as single master.

Issue:
- I encounter various issues during standard operations like: critical write error (system message from smartdrv), speedsys bench hangs during hdd bench, copy jobs led to „drive not formatted“ etc etc. Not always but sometimes.
- I ran scandisk, ndd even calibrate (min level) but no bad sectors can be found
- all other hdds are working fine
- pls note that my isa runs at 15MHz. I don’t know whether this is hdd dependent

Question:
- what could be the issue?
- might a low level format out of the bios including re-adjustment the interleave help?

Thanks a lot

why is your ISA 15Mhz and not 8Mhz ? If using an ISA HDD adapter that is most likely why it errors.....

Hate posting a reply and then have to edit it because it made no sense 😁 First computer was an IBM 3270 workstation with CGA monitor. Stuff: https://archive.org/details/@horun

change to 8mhz and test if still happening

is this an MFM drive? you wont low level format IDE
if MFM then ISA clock is prime suspect

Single Master implies IDE for me. Probably a ProDrive LPS 52AT from about 1991...
Since IDE controllers are basically just buffers to the ISA bus even if you use a later (post 1994) IDE controller capable of handling that faster ISA bus that old 50Mb drive onboard controller can not, but will try 🤣
