Well, R600 was a huge mess and AMD overpaid. I doubt they would have offered 5b if this was known earlier. And yes, ATI went for the money. Would they have sold out if R600 was a success?
At that time they were lagging on many fronts:
* late with practical CF implementation (remember CrossFire edition cards and Y cables?), that was resolved relatively late with X1950Pro
* late with GPGPU functionality
* late with DX10
* buggy chipsets (and Nvidia just snatched ULi which could have been used instead of problematic ATI's southbridges)

Huh really... I remember ATi/ AMD being the very first to introduce new DX features and even DDR/ GDDR memory on their cards even nodes tooo... That was a trend with ATi for many time... I think with DX8, DX9, DX10, DX11 (not sure) and DX12 later on.... Nodes and memory Radeon cards was the first to introduce DDR2, GDDR3, GDDR4 (lol that was short lived), then GDDR5...

Their main problem was for me at least, the lack of brand recognition, mind share and marketing, that was the MAIN problem.. And some times buggy drivers... ATi chipsets was not a big deal, since they did release how much 1 or 2 chipsets, while nVIDIA did had alot of nForce chipsets... Main thing was GPUs, and that they got OUTsold by nVIDIA 3 to 4 times...

About the crossfire early cables sure.. BUT 3Dfx did the SAME, LONG before any of them, and yet they was famous and known, and everyone wanted an Voodoo card... So is that really a problem ...

They needed chipsets to have feature parity with Nvidia (SLI), they were late and had issues. Intel at that time did not support CrossFire.
Marketing was actully running hype train with R600, which backfired.

Maybe.. BUT Intel did make chipsets as well, so ATi could just go to Intel and make a deal for them to support Radeon and CrossFire... There was also AMD they did release some chipsets in the past so they could have go to them, or to VIA... So i dont think that was a big of a problem, specially if they did go to Intel...

And how well did the chipset thing went for nVIDIA, after nForce 7, nForce 8 ect never saw the day light... These days AMD and Intel make their own chipsets, they can even lock nVIDIA out for being scumbags... Remember the GEforce partner program, that was as nasty as when Intel did gave money to OEMs not to buy/ use any AMD cpus... So i think if nVIDIA gets too cocky they can easily be deal with...

As i said for me the main problem for ATi was bad marketing, NON brand recognition, NON mind share, and all of that made nVIDIA OUTsold them 3 to 4 times more...

• M396F motherboard with AMD 386SX-40 CPU. My first 386 ever, usually I'm more interested in the late 90s and early 2000s stuff, but it was in the lot, so why not.
• MB-8433UUD-A motherboard, UMC chipset, AMD 486DX4-100 CPU installed. I don't have a working 486 motherboard with PCI yet, so it's a welcome addition to the collection.
• Shuttle HOT-591P Ver. 2.0 motherboard (Super Socket 7, Via MVP3). Since the Gigabyte GA-5AA that I am currently building a system around is acting up and refuses to POST every so often, it might get replaced with this Shuttle board. It was the main reason for me to get this lot, actually.
• Tseng ET4000AX ISA video card, no details are known. Might be made by "Ara-Tech" according to the sticker on the BIOS chip...
• Some mystery ISA interface card, looks like a PS/2 mouse connector or something. Labelled "HS - 3000 REV2", haven't found any useful info on a quick first attempt.

Got this lot for 35€ shipped, so it's like 7€ per piece. Everything's untested, of course, so fingers crossed that some of it still works.

Last but not least from my $50.00 haul of parts a couple of months ago is this Soyo K7V dragon Plus. It has so many bad caps on it that I'm afraid to even try and power it on as is, so I'll take a chance and recap it prior to trying it out. It's the motherboard equivalent of a teenager with bad acne. Ought to be an enjoyable project so long as the end result works.

Triple monitor arm, couple display port to hdmi dongles, another couple of 23mp68 IPS panels. Cs: source in surround is gorgeous

Picked this up from a friends business, he was trying to clear out some old stuff and had this beauty just waiting for me.... for free.

It is an Antec Performance TX1050B (AND IT WEIGHS A TON....) along with an Asus NCCH-DL Motherboard (Dual Socket 604)/CPU/RAM, it had an MSI GeForce 4 MX4000 GPU in there as well that I already yanked out. All in all, a great find.

That intel copper heatsink is spendy still on ebay.

Found this at the thrift store today for $5, brand new in the shrink wrap. It'll be perfect for wireless networking my older rigs. Now I have a use for those D Link wireless G PCI adapters I didn't know what I'd do with.

One of the later WRT54G's, hence the speedmark and rangemark marketing terms. Still a nice find and usable with a custom firmware. No Gbit of course, but why would you need that with old computers. 😉

It will literally only be used on the rare occasion I want to use wifi on my older computers to connect with my other older computers. It will be on the LAN only, no internet. The ones I'll use it with have a 10/100 NIC or 802.11G wireless NIC only so it's perfect for that.

That is weird all the ones on google images have all those empty spots populated with capacitors.

I think that's because it weighs like 1.5 pounds and is pure copper, so the metal alone is worth a good $7 nowadays and people have long since recycled almost all of them.

I have that exact card! It works fine without the capacitors, and the driver disc contains just the standard Aureal software you can find anywhere on the web.

I have attached a photo for comparison.

Pff, good news... I guess this is the bare minimum to work. At closer look not only the big caps are missing, also a dozen of the smaller ones.

Got this Yamaha YMF719E-S today for 8 EUR. It was sold as "untested/condition unknown" hence the low price. Visually, it seemed fine with no scratches on the PCB and only some mildly bent pins on the wavetable header, so I grabbed it.

Seems like a generic model, possibly made by Labway. I ran some preliminary tests, and it appears to be working fine, at least so far. Looking forward to comparing it to my OPTi 82C930 and my ESS AudioDrive 1868F. These cards have similar feature sets, so it should be fun to pit them against each other.
